SHABBAT SHALOM from Hay-Bar Yotvata!

Hay-Bar Yotvata Nature Reserve is where a revolutionary project has been established for the restoration of wild life that has become extinct in Israel, in particular the Asian wild ass (onager – Equus hemionus) and the Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx).

The Yotvata oasis is half an hour's drive from the city of Eilat.

We are beyond words!
NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Astronaut Jessica Meir gave us the best holiday gift by bringing back to the Consulate a Miniature Book of Torah that she took with her to space. Thank you, we were filled with tremendous excitement to see the photo of the Book of (Tehilim) floating in the middle of the Cupola on the International Space Station.

SHABBAT SHALOM from the Menorah sculpture at the Knesset (Israel's parliament).

The work of Benno Elkan (1877–1960), a German-born British Jewish sculptor, is 4.30 meters high and weighs 4 tons. It is molded of bronze and resembles the menorah (7-branched candelabra) of the Temple.

The main theme of the work depicts the spiritual struggles of the Jewish people and carved in relief on it is the passage “Not by might and not by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of Hosts” (Zechariah 4:6).
The Menorah includes relief engravings of biblical figures and events from the tradition and history of the Jewish people. The engravings on the six side branches of the Menorah portray the fate of the Jewish people since it was exiled from its land, and the engravings on the center branch portray the people’s fate since the beginning of the return to the land up to the establishment of the State of Israel.

SHABBAT SHALOM from Masada!

Masada is not only important because it is an UNESCO World Heritage Site or an ancient fortress occupying a breathtaking, strategic location high on a flat plateau above the Dead Sea, but because of its symbolic importance of determination and which continues to this day with many Israeli soldiers sworn in here.

The fortress was built in the year 30 BCE by King Herod, and at the beginning of the great revolt against Rome in the year 68 CE, the site was conquered by a group of Jewish zealots, and Masada became their last stronghold.

In the year 72, the Romans besieged Masada and succeeded in reaching the steep fortress. In the end, the valiant fight of the 960 Jewish defenders left behind a saga of courage, heroism, and martyrdom.

SHABBAT SHALOM from The Ramon Crater!

It is the world’s largest erosion crater or Makhtesh. A landform unique to Israel’s Negev and Egypt’s Sinai deserts’. It was created 220 million years ago when oceans covered the area. The Ramon Crater measures about 25 miles in length and between 2 and 10km in width, shaped like a long heart, and forms Israel’s largest national park, the Ramon Nature Reserve.

Jewish exodus from the Muslim world

Jews had lived in the Arab lands for thousands of years, and many of their communities preceded the advent of Islam. But in the 20th century, with the rise of Arab nationalism and the conflict in Palestine, the new Arab regimes began a campaign of massive violations of the rights of their Jewish citizens. Arab states expropriated property of their native Jews, and denaturalized, expelled, arrested, tortured and murdered many of them.

Today we are marking the exit and deportation of hundreds of thousands of Jews from Arab countries and from Iran in the years following the establishment of the State of Israel. It is not for nothing that this day is marked on the day after the 29th of November. The Arab countries, which never accepted the UN declaration on the establishment of a Jewish state, compelled the Jews living in their territories to leave their homes while leaving their assets behind.

Happy Sigd!

Sigd is an Ethiopian Jewish holiday. During Sigd the community marks the renewal of the covenant between the Jewish people, God and His Torah. On Sigd, Ethiopian Jews pray to God and plead to return to Zion.
The Kessim (Ethiopian Jewish religious leaders), dressed in their traditional robes, carry the Torah scrolls while holding multi-colored umbrellas. They stand on an elevated stage, read excerpts from the Bible and recite prayers before members of the community.

A blessed Sigd to our Jewish Ethiopian brothers and sisters marking the holiday tonight!

In light of the Sigd holiday coming up this week, we once again invite you to enjoy the Austin Jewish Film Festival opener, as today will be the last chance to watch it online.

Sigd is an Ethiopian Jewish holiday. During Sigd the community marks the renewal of the covenant between the Jewish people, G-d, and His Torah.

The film follows Israeli diplomat, Asher Naim, on a seemingly insurmountable mission to bring 15,000 Ethiopian Jews to Israel. The docudrama follows the behind-the-scenes politics leading up to Operation Solomon – the two-day airlift in May 1991 with the climactic chaos of the Ethiopian Civil War in the background.

Liberation of N**i Camps: James Rose (U.S. 42nd Division)

This Veterans Day we share James A. Rose impressions from the liberation of Dachau concentration camp at the end of World War II.

On April 26, 1945, the 42nd and 45th Infantry Divisions and the 20th Armored Division of the US Army liberated approximately 32,000 prisoners at Dachau.
As they neared the camp, they found more than 30 railroad cars filled with bodies brought to Dachau, all in an advanced state of decomposition.

Veterans, we salute you.
