Nineteen years after September 11, 2001, we continue to honor the sacrifice made by our Fire, EMS, and Police brothers and sisters. We remember the personal and national losses on that day.

We pause to honor them this morning with a moment of silence. We honor the great sacrifice made by 343 firefighters, 8 EMS, and 61 police officers who perished on that fateful day.

May we always remember and never forget.

PATIENT REUNION
Cyclist, Nery Hernandez, thanks Cy-Fair FD crews for saving his life at a patient reunion on September 2, 2020, at Cy-Fair FD Station 6 in Houston. Hernandez suffered from sudden cardiac arrest while on a training ride with BNW Cycling Team in July 2020, in Houston.

On Thursday, July 23, 2020, Cy-Fair FD Medic 5, Paramedic Tiffany Fussell, and EMT Michael Gordy, were transporting a patient to a nearby hospital when the crew was flagged down for a report of an adult male cyclist who collapsed from sudden cardiac arrest.

Medic 5 crew discovered Hernandez had no pulse and wasn’t breathing so they immediately began CPR and called for additional resources. Crews successfully revived Hernandez on the side of Eldridge Parkway as additional resources arrived on-scene.

Hernandez was transported by Memorial Hermann Life Flight to Memorial Hermann - TMC where doctors performed life-saving surgery and installed an implanted cardioverter defibrillator. Hernandez was diagnosed with Brugada Syndrome, a disorder that leads to an irregular rhythm in the ventricles, this resulted in him having sudden cardiac arrest due to this ventricular arrhythmia.

According to the American Heart Association, about 90 percent of people who experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest die. Hernandez, who has CPR and first-aid training, advocates for others to do the same. “I think everyone should have CPR training, it’s the knowledge that can save someone’s life, I strongly believe that,” Hernandez said.

“I’m really thankful, I thank God every day that I’m alive. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for all of you,” Hernandez said, “I tell everyone I have an angel who saved my life, the Medic who performed CPR on me, now I know that my angel’s name is Tiffany.”

Thanks to Cy-Fair - Fire Station 5 for allowing us to come out and practice our vehicle extraction skills for a training night. We do not get the chance to practice on actual cars often, so this was an awesome opportunity for our members to touch up on their skills and allow for our new members to learn. Hope to do it again in the future!

09/22/2019

Two Thursdays ago, Firefighters at Station 10 and Station 1 took the opportunity to work with the Medics that were on duty at the Station that night. This training consisted of the Medics showing Firefighters where everything is on their medic units along with how to operate the tools Firefighters would interact with the most during calls.

Next, Medics practiced their skills for CPR calls while interacting with firefighters as it would be on an actual scene. The first scenario consisted of Medics arriving on scene and beginning CPR. Fire crews then arrived and took over chest compressions along with bagging (breathing for) the patient while Medics practiced more advanced skills such as medication pushing and monitor reading.

Next scenario consisted of Fire crews arriving first, then Medics. Same principles apply here. Check patient for pulse and alertness. If no pulse, begin CPR and breathing for the patient while setting our monitor up until Medic crews arrive.

This practice allows for the Firefighters and Medics to better communicate on scene while allowing for both parties to work out issues that need to be fixed in order to provide the best care for the patient.

Interested in learning more, stop by your local Station on Thursday nights and speak with the members!!

Transporter 10 had its first runs since being stationed at Station 10. It was assigned to a mutual-aid assignment with a neighboring fire department to assist in water rescue/evacuations. Glad the crew was able to assist in the time of need for another department. Its a brotherhood and we will never say no to helping others out. We will continue to be ready for when the next time the Transporter is needed.
