When people think of First Responders, they see the glory, the bright flashing lights, the good guys and gals with smiles, so eager to help and make a difference in the community.

What you don’t see is the toll it takes mentally from seeing the truly awful things life can bring us. Death, destruction, lack of sleep, incidents involving young children, elderly, just to name a few.

How do your HFD Firefighters cope with these everyday issues while still maintaining a degree of excellence that only comes from a Houston Firefighter?

Some choose to talk to their clergy, while some use working out as a way to cope. One of the best ways is talking it out either with fellow firefighters, or someone trained to help us.

That’s where this amazing man came in, Dr. Sam Buser, HFD’s Psychologist. Dr. Buser has helped, changed, and SAVED, many many many lives here in HFD. He took care of the ones that take care of you!

Please help us in congratulating Dr. Buser on his well earned retirement and THANK him for his unending love, care, and professionalism here with HFD. He will truly be missed.

THANK YOU Dr. Buser!!! You will never truly know how much of a difference you made and how much you helped us!! Good luck and ENJOY retirement!! Stay safe!

Praying for you and your family, Captain!

Prayers for our Captain.

From his wife:

Please pray for our family. Will’s cancer is spreading and they have stopped all treatment. We have started hospice to manage his pain, but we are leaving tomorrow to have a wonderful spring break family vacation with his parents, siblings and kids in the beautiful Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. While we may not understand or agree, God has a plan and He knows best. 🙏🏻

If you don’t need to be out…stay home. Roads are already refreezing. Another storm is moving in tonight and it will make driving conditions much more dangerous! Do your HFD firefighters a favor and only go out if absolutely necessary.

With the frigid temps and incoming winter storms, please take the necessary precautions TODAY and prepare yourself, family and friends.

If you don’t have to be on the roads, stay off of them. Please don’t go out for fun or just to look around. Most importantly, slow down and give yourself plenty of space between cars.

If you are using a space heater, make sure to plug it directly into the wall outlet and NOT an extension cord or surge protector of any kind. Keep the space heater 3 feet minimum away from walls and other objects, especially flammable materials. These are a MAJOR contributor to the 🔥 we see when the weather gets cold.

If you have elderly neighbors or family, make sure they are taken care of and comfortable.

Please make smart decisions and don’t put yourself or any first responders at risk because of a careless, bad decision.

HFD Fire Station 86 crews truly care about our community. Please be safe and take care of each other!

If you are watching with friends and family, please be safe. Don’t drink and drive. Call someone or stay put. Make exit plans PRIOR to heading out to watch the game!

Have a fun and safe evening!!!
