Phillip Gordon from Sterling High School is working at International Trucks of Houston as a student intern and recently accepted a position with them upon graduation. Phillip has been working alongside Juan Rodriguez in the Parts Department (see pic) where it is very complicated and important for him to learn the “whole truck” and diagnose problems for the owner or service technician. Juan stated that he is extremely happy to see his company working with high school students he believes it sets a good example for the students as well as other companies and he is happy to be a part of it. Phillip has been in the automotive pathway since 9th grade and during his junior and senior year he had the opportunity to work as an intern four days a week at International Trucks of Houston.

Project-Based Learning was on display recently at Lee High School, with valuable assistance from our industry partner, Madera Works of Texas. Madera has been a consistently strong partner with HISD, developing curriculum for Mill and Cabinetmaking Technology and working closely the instructor, Johnny Brooks, to link real-world experiences and internships for his students. The company also sponsored externships for Linked Learning instructors over the summer to give the educators first-hand knowledge and experience in workplace for which they are preparing our students.

Freshmen from the Construction & Design Academy at Lee were asked to complete a project that involved cutting and assembling a door from diagram with very specific dimensions and finishing it off with a polished stain. This Linked Learning Project was coordinated with Carl Miller, Operations Manager for Madera Works. The students' ability to work together as a team, follow written instructions, and formulate a plan of ex*****on , as well as their skill of ex*****on were judged and recognized.
