Texas Fire Fighters Home

Texas Fire Fighters Home The Texas Fire Fighters Home will provide low-cost housing to fire fighters and first responders while they undergo treatment in the Texas Medical Center.

FIRE FIGHTERS HAVE AN OCCUPATIONAL RISK of exposure to toxins and hazardous chemicals. As a result, fire fighters suffer workplace risks—particularly cancer—at a statistically higher rate than the average population, which necessitates specialized treatment. Often, this involves extended stays with access to healthcare providers at the Texas Medical Center (TMC). The cost of hotels and short-term

housing for patients and their families coming to Houston for such treatment can be crippling, and health insurance usually does not cover lodging expenses. The Rotary Club of the University Area (RCUA), located near the TMC, has undertaken the project of providing fully furnished housing to professional and volunteer firefighters and other first responders at little or no cost for use while they undergo treatment at the TMC for any on-the-job injury or resulting work-related medical condition. This housing is called the Texas Fire Fighters Home (TFFH). The goal of the TFFH Project is to mitigate a large portion of the financial burden associated with this short-term housing during the time that patients, often with their families, must stay accessible to the TMC.

The Rotary Club of Coronado held its 25th annual Fundraiser, "Low Tide Ride & Stride" in 2022. Proceeds from this fundraiser are donated to 2 First Responder organizations and 2 Wounded Warrior Organizations. The annual race is held when the ocean tide is at its, lowest because participants walk, run, or bike ride on Coronado beach. The Fire Fighter's Home was one of this year's recipients. Monies donated will cover the cost of one apartment for two years!

The president of the Coronado Rotary Club, LuAnn Miller, and Amy Steward, Chair of the fundraiser, presented FFH representatives Irene Hickey and Lindsey Kroll with the check on Wednesday, at the Corondao Rotary Club's weekly meeting. Irene and Lindsey flew to Coronado to accept the check and give an update on the Fire Fighters Home status.

Luann's son-in-law was a captain with the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue for 25 years. He came down with work-related, non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma at the age of 42. He received treatment at MD Anderson starting in 2010. He and her daughter, a nurse, flew back and forth for treatment. On 11/12/2012, he started treatment at MD Anderson for a total stem cell transplant. They were there until his transplant on 6/13/2013. He passed on July 10,2013. LuAnn stated, "Providing housing for the firefighters and family while seeking treatment is very dear to my heart. Thank you for all you do."

The Rotary Fire Fighters Home is excited to announce the addition of its fifth apartment in the 3rd quarter of 2021, due to the generosity of TSAFF. TSAFF is already providing monies to cover the lease of one of our apartments and it just gave us the good news that it now will be paying for the lease for another apartment. Both leases are covered for the next two years! Thank you TSAFF!!!

We are also excited to announce that the Rotary Club of the University Area-Houston is donating monies to pay for one of our apartments for the next year. Thank you RCUA-H. https://portal.clubrunner.ca/3071

It is through the generosity of these sponsors that we are able to continue to help firefighters and first responders in need of housing while they deal with significant health issues (primarily cancer).

THANKS AND APPRECIATION to the FIREFIGHTING COMMUNITY

The Rotary Club University Area (RCUA) initiated a project to write notes of thanks and appreciation to all the firefighters and first responders in the greater Harris County Area. Club members are hand-writing personal thank-you notes to each of the 66 Fire Departments in Harris County, including HFD. And, within HFD, to the 95 individual fire stations.

This is a project of love and appreciation. RCUA has supported firefighters and first responders for many years. Their keynote project is the Rotary Fire Fighters Home (RFFH). RFFH provides free, short-term housing to firefighters and first responders coming to Houston for medical treatment at the Texas Medical Center. Unfortunately, that treatment is usually at MD Anderson Cancer Center because cancer is one of the biggest dangers firefighters face on a day-to-day basis due to the dangerous carcinogens in the air during a fire. https://www.rotaryfirefightershome.org/

The motto of RFFH is “They were there for us; we are here for them.”

In keeping with this motto and RCUA’s ongoing commitment to support firefighters and first responders, the Covid 19 “Thanks and Appreciation” note project was initiated.
If you would like to join RCUA in this thank-you note endeavor, please contact Irene Hickey, [email protected] and let her know how many notes you’d like to send. She will provide you the names and addresses.

Rotary Club University Area Responds to Covid 19
FIREFIGHTER / FIRST RESPONDER PERSONAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT

The Rotary Club of the University Area (RCUA) is spearheading a project to help firefighters and first responders in terms of their PPE needs PPE needs while dealing with this Covid 19 Pandemic. RCUA generously committed $2,000 to this project to get it started.

There are 66 Fire Departments in Harris County, including HFD. And, HFD alone has approx. 95 individual fire stations. Even though things have gotten better, PPE supplies are still scarce.

Irene is working directly with the firefighting community to determine the need (on going) and to find supplies to fill the need.

Of those that have responded so far, there is the usual need for small hand sanitizers (pocket size), gloves, gowns, thermometers (infrared) and the N95 masks. Some of the smaller fire departments do not have a budget for the volume of PPE supplies which they now need/or will need.

In keeping with this motto and RCUA’s ongoing commitment to support firefighters and first responders, the Covid 19 PPE project was initiated.

If you or your Rotary Club is interested in contributing to this Covid 19 project, please contact Irene Hickey at [email protected].

Gift Registry & Lists : Target

We are still doing the fund raising to actually build the apartments to house firefighters while they are in Houston being treated for cancer at MDACC. In the interim, however, we have rented one apartment and through generous donations have been able to furnish it fully.

Now, the good news is that we're getting ready to lease our second apartment. So, this also means that we need to once again seek donations of household items. To do this, we've set up a gift Registry at Target. Your help in spreading the word is appreciated. Please consider helping up furnish this apartment, by going to this link: https://www.target.com/gift-registry/gift/WccHN5yzCuGnKPdeS1Er5A.

And, help spread the word about the registry, by sending the link to your friends and family and posting on your social media accounts. Our motto is “You were there for us; we are here for you.” Help us be there for them.

Create or find a wedding, baby, college, or housewarming registry or a registry for any special occasion. Start a shopping list for everyday items. Create a Kids’ Wish List so your kids can get the fun holiday and birthday gifts they want.
