Today, this young man and his mom got a chance to say thank you for the outstanding and exceptional care that the crews from Cy-Fair Station 4 provided.

A few weeks ago, the young man had a medical emergency in which we responded. Moments like these can be very stressful for the parent, but the compassionate and reassuring care that this young man received, helped put mom more at ease.

We are glad for the positive outcome and thankful for their visit today.

Today is Test it Tuesday! We not only recommend to test your smoke/Carbon Monoxide detectors today, but test your Fire Escape Plan.

Did you know that practicing a fire escape plan drastically increases the chances of escaping a fire, but in order to do that, you have to have a plan. Create a plan that every member in your household can understand, then visualize it and practice it! Practice it routinely, like on Test it Tuesday.

Only 45.3% of households that reported having a fire escape plan had actually practiced it. Therefore, only 23% of homes in the U.S. have a fire escape plan and practice it.

Lets do our part to increase our chances of making it out of a fire.

For more information, visit your local fire station and ask questions about creating a fire escape plan or visit the Red Cross website. You can also contact your homeowners insurance company and they can guide you to the appropriate resources.

This week is National Poison Prevention Week and we want to help you prevent and also know what to do incase of a poisoning.

There are many things that can cause a poisoning, like an animal/insect bite or sting, Carbon Monoxide, foods, household chemicals/products, garden chemicals/products, medicine and plants, just to name a few.

-If you suspect a poisoning and see or feel that the reaction is severe or can be severe, call 911 and then follow the listed instructions that apply to your emergency.
-If able to talk, after calling 911, you can call the Poison Control help line at 1-800-222-1222.
-If the person inhaled poison, get to fresh air right away.
-If the person has poison on the skin, take off any clothing the poison touched. Rinse skin with running water for 15 to 20 minutes.
-If the person has poison in the eyes, rinse eyes with running water for 15 to 20 minutes.
-If the person ingested something, do not give water, milk, activated charcoal or anything else unless instructed by the Poison Control help line.

The best way to avoid a poisoning, is prevention.
-Teach your family to never touch or put anything in their mouths unless they know what it is.
-Keep all medicines, and potentially poisonous substances, in locked cabinets or out of the reach of children.
-Keep medicines in their original containers, properly labeled, and store them appropriately.
-Never share prescription medicines. If you are taking more than one drug at a time, check with your health care provider, pharmacist.
-Have a working carbon monoxide detector in your home. The best places for a CO detector are near bedrooms and close to furnaces.
-Household cleaners and disinfectants can make you sick when not used properly. Always follow the instructions on the product label to ensure safe and effective use.
-Bleach is especially toxic and should not be mixed with anything other than water.
-Keep all household cleaners and potentially poisonous substances in locked cabinets or out of the reach of children.
-Keep products in their original containers.
-Do not use food containers (such as cups or bottles) to store household cleaners and other chemicals or products.
-Keep all laundry products locked up, high, and out of the reach of children.
-Do not use bleach on food products.
-Avoid using household cleaners and disinfectants on hands or skin improperly.
-Keep all chemicals and potentially poisonous substances in locked cabinets or out of the reach of children.
-Never mix household or chemical products together. Doing so can create a dangerous gas.

These are just a few tips on what to do incase of poisoning and for prevention.

Today is a reminder that as our clocks move forward, we should check our smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Having proper working detectors is the best way to warn you of smoke, fire and dangerous carbon monoxide levels.

Statistics state that you have a roughly 50% better chance of escaping a fire with proper working detectors.

So for the safety of you and your family, test your detectors and change those batteries.

One of our biggest allies after a residential fire is the Red Cross. They have worked by our side to help those affected by a devastating fire or natural disaster. Just recently, during the freeze, they sent us several boxes of blankets for us to use on any temperature related call we made.

So we want to recognize that March is the Red Cross Month. Throughout the month of March, they honor people like you who make the lifesaving mission of the American Red Cross possible — the individuals across the country who turn compassion into action, helping others in times of crisis. The Red Cross Month celebration has been an annual tradition since 1943, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued the first Red Cross Month proclamation.

We, along with the American Red Cross, invite you and others to join the 80th annual Red Cross Month by giving, giving blood, volunteer or learning lifesaving skills.

For more information on how to volunteer or learn more about the American Red Cross or March being their month of recognition, visit www.redcross.org

With Spring forward coming up, it is a good time for us to remind you of the importance of working smoke detectors.

Some of you may not know that alot of the older smoke detectors work independently. That means that if one sounds, the others may not sound as well. This leads us to recommending that you have interconnected smoke alarms/detectors.

Instead of your smoke alarms operating independently of one another, interconnected smoke alarms work as an interlinked system. If one alarm goes off, the rest of the alarms will go off. This creates an entire smoke alarm system to help provide you and your family with an early warning to an emergency and give you a better chance to get out early.

Witnessing someone having a seizure can be overwhelming. Following are some tips from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention that will assist you on helping when someone is having a seizure.

When to call 911:
*The person has never had a seizure before.
*The person has difficulty breathing or waking after the seizure.
*The seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes.
*The person has another seizure soon after the first one.
*The person is hurt during the seizure.
*The seizure happens in water.
*The person has a health condition like diabetes, heart disease, or is pregnant.

First aid for any type of seizure:
*Stay with the person until the seizure ends and they are fully awake. After it ends, help the person sit in a safe place. Once they are alert and able to communicate, tell them what happened in very simple terms.
*Move away items that are near them and turn them over on their side after the seizure if they can't sit up.
*Put something soft under their head if possible during the seizure.
*Remove glasses/shades and loosen anything around their neck.
*Comfort the person and speak calmly.
*Check to see if the person is wearing a medical bracelet or other emergency information.
*Keep yourself and other people calm.
*Contact a family member if possible.

Things NOT to do:
*Do not hold the person down or try to stop his or her movements.
*Do not put anything in the person’s mouth. This can injure teeth or the jaw. A person having a seizure cannot swallow his or her tongue.
*Do not try to give mouth-to-mouth breaths (like CPR). People usually start breathing again on their own after a seizure.
*Do not rub them down with rubbing alcohol.
*Do not offer the person water or food until he or she is fully alert.

Today marks the 43rd year anniversary of Driver Operator Richard "Big Daddy" Corliss with the Cy-Fair Fire Department.

There are many men that have a fire service career that influence the man, Big Daddy influenced the fire service. There are countless men and women that he unknowingly has mentored and trained with the knowledge and insight that only he has. That knowledge has not only been related to the fire service, but life in general.

The Cy-Fair Fire Department has had the honor of him serving in many capacities and for that, the department and the Cy-Fair community is indebted.

Our safety message for this morning is, “Get Out Stay Out.”

The safest option for anyone inside a building that is on fire is to get out immediately and call 9-1-1. It is also very important to stay out once you get out. Too many times, responding fire departments have seen injury or death occur because the resident re-entered a building that was on fire.

With today's home building materials and the furnishings of our homes being made with synthetic materials, fires in homes burn at a much faster rate. This is why having proper working smoke detectors is important.

Thank you, again, to Dr. Hennessey of the Animal ER of Northwest Houston for donating more pet oxygen masks.

These are invaluable tools that we use in the field whenever a dog/cat is overcome by smoke due to a fire.

She did this for us on her birthday, so Happy Birthday Dr. Hennessey and thank you for always having us in mind when it comes to life saving equipment for our furry families.

This morning just after 4:30am, the Cy-Fair Fire Department responded to a fire at a commercial building on the 12000 block of W. Little York Rd.

Crews were able to locate the fire in an extractor and did a great job confining it to the machinery with only smoke entering the facility.

Thank you to Jersey Village FD and Cypress Creek FD for responding to the fire as well.

No injuries were reported.

One out of every 10 million lithium-ion batteries fails, a condition that has a high potential that leads to a fire.

If they've been damaged or have some kind of defect, they can cause devastating fires. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that there were more than 25,000 issues involving fires or overheating stemming from lithium ion batteries in a five-year.

The batteries are being used in more devices, including cheaper, uncertified batteries with greater risk.

Who do I contact about a fire hydrant issue?
The Gentleman behind the wheel is Burt Koenig his wife told me today his pass away from COVID about a month ago. She what to let people know who knew him that he past away.

For the crews that go to Luby’s 290 and 1960 he was the one who bought breakfast. He was also a Station 1 member in the 80s.

I told Mrs Koenig that I would put the sad news on Facebook and she gave me her permission.

Please keep the Koenig family in your thought.
