Houston MN Public Library Mission Statement:
Connect the people in our community to resources, each other, and to our world.

The Houston Public Library opened its doors to the public in February 2002, the result of a two-year grass-roots effort led by a group of hard-working, committed volunteers. In our twenty short years of existence, our circulation has risen from 7,239 to over 30,000 items per year. In addition, we have:

•moved from a small residential home owned by the city of Houston to a permanent location in a

building donated by Ace Communications Group

•run a successful fundraising campaign to pay for improvements to make our new home comply with ADA handicap accessibility requirements

•joined our regional library cooperative, SELCO

•cataloged and automated our collection

•appeared on the cover of “The Libraries of Minnesota, “ published by the Minnesota Historical Society

•run a second successful fundraising campaign, allowing us to renovate the interior of the library by our 10th birthday.

•been the recipient of numerous grants and awards (Libri Foundation grant, Baker & Taylor 2004 FOLSA award, Minnesota Legacy grants, United Way Venture Grants, Carl & Verna Schmidt Foundation grant, etc)

Despite our limited staff and space, we have been proud to host over the years everything from weekly Saturday morning story times and annual Summer Reading Programs, to a weigh-in group, a book club for adults, ukulele classes and clubs, knitting clubs, a kid's chess club, Maker (and Breaker!) Space events, author presentations, and the popular Book Hound therapy dog program. The library is currently run by Director Beth Peterson-Lee and assistant, Sarah Erdmann.

Today’s Storytime focused on using our imaginations to find shapes and pictures in the clouds. We read "It Looked Like Spilt Milk," "Little Cloud," "Cloud Art," "Cloud Dance," and "Sidney the Lonely Cloud." After the stories, the kids created their own cloud pictures using white paint and explored the different shapes and images they could see in their artwork. Next week we'll be reading about rainbows!
