Advocates say courts are failing domestic violence victims after mother's death

"Knowledge of an abuser’s capabilities leads survivors to make near-daily choices on what is best for their safety, said Maisha Colter, CEO of the nonprofit AVDA (Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse). That extends to recanting testimony. 'They appear to help the abuser, but sometimes they’re trying to help themselves,' Colter said."--Houston Chronicle

Our thoughts are with the family who recently lost their loved one to domestic violence. In this Noticias Telemundo interview, AVDA Client Advocate Wendy Arias shares the importance of safety planning for survivors preparing to leave an abusive relationship—and even after separation. Locally, we have seen an increase in third-party fatalities and injuries during an altercation, so now domestic violence is reaching outside of the intimate partner relationship and hurting friends and family.

AVDA is here to help end abuse. If you or someone you know is surviving family violence, please call 713-224-9911 for help.
