This message from HFD Fire Chief to all HFD personnel a day before Thanksgiving inserted with a letter of appreciation from a Houstonian:

MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF

Tomorrow as we sit down with our families it is important to remember that one-fourth of our members will celebrate Thanksgiving dinner at fire stations, the OEC, and at Fire Prevention/Arson offices across our City. This is one of the many sacrifices we make by choosing a career in the fire service. I know that during their shift they will respond to nearly 900 calls for service from our citizens. Many of these calls will be from people having the worst day of their lives. But I also know that our citizens will be afforded the highest level of service from our members because that is what you do every day.

Every week I receive letters like the one I have copied below. As you read the letter you will see that this was just another routine call for us, but to our customer it was devastating. However, the way she was treated made all the difference. I have never received a letter telling me how good our hose lay was, or that our ventilation technique was perfect, or even that we took a blood pressure in the correct manner. What I receive is letters describing how we treat people. That is really what matters most to them. The thoughts expressed by this customer, say better than I ever could, how much you all are truly appreciated.

Dear Chief Garrison,

Please do not consider my inexcusable delay in writing you as a lack of gratitude. I have no excuses – either good or bad – for my tardiness. It was never my intention to let my thanks go unexpressed for such a long time. If anything, this letter should have gone to you immediately so you would know how much I truly appreciated the actions of the Houston Fire Department earlier this year.

My home was struck by lightning… Another neighbor called me and let me know that I needed to return to my home. I did that and was greeted by police officers, fire engines and firemen. My home was still standing although siding was missing and there was a hole in the roof with smoke tricking out. I just stood and looked at it – somewhat immobilized by the shock of what happened. I felt as though I should do something, but I had no idea what to do then or what would be needed later.

Before I arrived home, the firemen had prevented a fire from igniting and causing a total loss. There were areas of charred wood and water from their hoses, but their actions prevented the spread of destruction… Oh, how glad I was that I still had a home thanks to their hard work.

Then your staff of firefighters sprang into action again and in a different way. What they did that meant the most to me was the way they dealt with me. They were kind and gentle and so very considerate of me. They explained to me what they had done and why. They accompanied me inside when it was safe to enter the building. They let me know that my possessions were basically okay – just smelly with smoke. They stayed with me a short while after their work was done to ensure that I was all right. They made a horrible event much less horrible for me.

At long last I am telling you about the men who report to you. I want you to know how marvelous they were. I want you to know how thankful I am for what they did for me. I truly appreciate the Houston Fire Department!

Sincerely,
An appreciative citizen

To line and staff; classified and non-classified…
Thank you very much,
Have a Safe and Happy Thanksgiving

Terry Garrison
