When your city has been hit by a hurricane, and millions are waiting for their power to come back, it’s the little things that mean the most. To whoever keeps leaving duckies in random places around the school - thanks for making us smile.

Eighty years ago today, allied forces launched the largest amphibious operation in military history and landed 5 naval assault divisions on the beaches of Normandy, France. The invasion force consisted of over 7,000 ships and landing craft manned by over 195,000 military personnel from 8 countries. Of those, almost 133,000 were Americans. There were over 10,000 casualties. This day, this operation, allowed Allied forces to gain a foothold on the western front and led to the downfall of Hi**er and the end of WWII in Europe.

This day also changed the life of Garland Walker, who land on Omaha beach on D-Day. Walker sustained injuries to his head, both legs, and right wrist. He spent 5 days on the beach before finally being evacuated to England. The injury to Walker’s wrist left him with nerve damage, ending his plan to become a surgeon. After teaching himself how to write left-handed, Walker went to law school. Garland Walker joined the faculty of South Texas College of Law in 1967 and served as dean from 1968 to 1984. For his part in D-Day, Walker was awarded the Palm by De Gaulle and the Purple Heart. Dean Walker died in December 1984. You can read about Dean Walker’s time and experiences in the Army in an interview he gave to Annotations, our student newspaper, in April 1978. The link is in our bio.

I’m happy to announce that based solely on our bell-ringing urban legend, everyone will pass the bar on their first try! Congrats class of 2024!*legal disclaimer: urban legends and bell ringing do not take the place of actual bar prep*

A friendly reminder that starting today the entire Library is an ultra quiet zone. This is stressful time, so please be respectful of your peers. There is absolutely no talking on the 1st, 4th, or 5th floors. Please use library voices (i.e. whisper) on the 2nd and 3rd floors. If you have to take a call, go into the stairwell or to the 6th floor terrace. Study rooms are NOT sound proof. If you have a noise complaint contact the reference desk or the patron services desk and we will take care of it.

On March 29, 2012, teams of law students from 40 schools across the nation took part in the first annual South Texas Mock Trial Challenge. The goal was to host a professional, organized, and challenging mock trial competition showcasing the strengths of South Texas College of Law: the alumni support, the college’s dedication to advocacy and legal research and writing, and the enthusiasm of our students. More than 300 alumni donated their time to judge rounds and their resources to fund the event.

The competition was held over four days with more than 30 rounds held at the Harris County Civil Courthouse and the historic Courts of Appeal building . with the final round held at the college in the T. Gerald Treece Courtroom. The team from Georgetown Law won top spot.
The tournament is still going strong - Stetson won the 13th annual South Texas Mock Trial Challenge just last week.

It’s that time of the semester - finals are around the corner and your fellow students are starting to hunker down to study. The 1st, 4th, and 5th floors are our ultra quiet floors where cell phone use and conversations are forbidden. Students in study rooms on these floors need to remember that they are not sound proof. If you wish to have quiet conversation with your study group please use the 2nd or 3rd floors. The Library staff does not enjoying shushing people, but we will when we get complaints from others. This is a stressful time for everyone; please be respectful of your fellow students. For more information on Library policies, please visit The Fred Parks Law Library webpage.

Today’s is Senator Searcy Bracewell. Bracewell had a lengthy relationship with South Texas. In January, 1952, he was the commencement speaker at our winter graduation, which was held in the YMCA Assembly Hall. He served on our board of trustees for 16 years and chaired the 50th Anniversary Development Campaign. When John Jackson stepped down as our 1st president, Bracewell succeed him. He is the only person to be President of South Texas College of Law without also being Dean.
