The Navy's Stewards of the Sea environmental outreach team, and Stewie, the Navy's environmental mascot, had an enjoyable day at our last day exhibiting at Fleet Week Houston.

DYK that the success of the Navy's environmental stewardship program contributes to the success of our military mission, while preserving the ocean environment?

The Navy collaborates with scientific and regulatory stakeholders to ensure responsible stewardship of natural resources.

The Navy's Stewards of the Sea environmental outreach team and Stewie had a productive day today at the Fleet Week Houston EXPO event in downtown Houston.

DYK that the Navy ensures that plastic waste at sea is processed in a way that will not impact the ocean environment?

Using plastic waste processors, thousands of pounds of plastic waste is compressed and melted into discs, which allows the ship to store all plastic waste for proper disposal on shore. Hope to see you tomorrow at the EXPO!

Another great day at Fleet Week Houston for the Navy's Stewards of the Sea environmental outreach team, and Stewie.

We had some great conversations with nearly 300 high school students!

DYK that the Navy implements protective measures before, during and after military readiness activities (such as training with active sonar or ordnance) to reduce potential impacts to marine species?

The Navy uses the best available science to develop these measures.

Join us over the weekend at the EXPO in downtown Houston.

Hope to see you there!

The Navy's Stewards of the Sea environmental outreach team, along with Stewie, the Navy's environmental mascot, had a great first day at Fleet Week Houston, engaging with more than 300 high school NJROTC students and other members of the public.

DYK that the Navy Marine Species Monitoring Program's focus areas support the research goals of understanding the effects of sound on marine mammals, developing new and modifying existing protective measures in order to mitigate potential impacts to marine species, and improving tools to model and estimate potential impacts?

Naval Supply Systems Command Fleet Logistics Center Norfolk held a “Bring Your Child to Work Day” yesterday, and invited Stewie, the Navy’s environmental mascot, to participate!

Stewie had a great time engaging with parents and children at the event. DYK that the Navy has a proven track record of working with environmental resource agencies and stakeholders, funding marine mammal research, and employing scientific experts focused on ensuring that the Navy actively conducts their activities in an environmentally responsible manner?

Some examples include:

Using trained lookouts to search for marine species in the vicinity of training/testing events.

Reducing power or securing active sonars when marine mammals get within a predetermined mitigation zone.

Maneuvering vessels to avoid close interactions with marine mammals and sea turtles.

Draft SEIS/OEIS for Mariana Islands Training and Testing Now Available for Public Review; Public Meetings Scheduled for March 2026

The Department of the Navy, including both the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps; the U.S. Air Force; the U.S. Army; and the U.S. Coast Guard have prepared a supplement to the 2015 Mariana Islands Training and Testing (MITT) Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)/Overseas EIS (OEIS) and the 2020 MITT Supplemental EIS (SEIS)/OEIS to assess the potential environmental effects associated with the Proposed Action to continue military readiness activities at sea and on Farallon de Medinilla within the MITT Study Area. Military readiness activities include training, testing, and range modernization and sustainment.

Public meetings will be held on Guam (March 18) and Saipan (March 19) to provide more information about the project and the environmental analysis. Visit www.nepa.navy.mil/mitteis to view the Draft SEIS/OEIS and learn more about the project, the public meetings, and ways to submit comments. Comments must be postmarked or received online by 11:59 p.m. ChST on May 1, 2026, for consideration in the preparation of the Final SEIS/OEIS.

BIG NEWS from the waters off Jacksonville, FL! 🐋 Our Navy scientists, in an exciting collaboration with partners from Duke University, had a remarkable encounter with a North Atlantic minke whale on one of our training ranges.

Here's the scoop:
• Real-time acoustic tracking led the team directly to the whale.
• They successfully recorded a previously undocumented pulse-train vocalization!
• New variations of known pulse trains were also captured, offering more insight into how these amazing animals communicate.

Why does this matter? This discovery enriches our acoustic data, helping us refine our methods to monitor and protect marine mammals using sound. Better insight into whale presence means we can more accurately assess any potential impacts of our activities.

This is a win for both mission readiness and the health of our oceans!

Did you know an ancient species of fish swims in Maine's Kennebec River?

Balancing mission readiness with environmental responsibility is a core commitment. In Maine's Kennebec River, the U.S. Navy partners with the Maine Department of Marine Resources to monitor the movements of protected Atlantic and shortnose sturgeon.

Our multi-year study uses acoustic telemetry to understand sturgeon patterns, allowing essential dredging to be scheduled at times that avoid impacting the fish. This vital work ensures safe passage for Navy vessels from Bath Iron Works to the sea while safeguarding an ancient species.

A huge thank you to everyone who braved the cold to join us at the Virginia Beach Winter Wildlife Festival this weekend!

Your amazing turnout and great questions made the day a huge success. We had a fantastic time connecting with the community!

Our SoTS biologists loved discussing how the U.S. Navy protects marine life while carrying out our mission. And of course, our mascot Stewie had a blast taking photos with attendees!

Thanks for a wonderful and memorable event, Virginia Beach!
