Dear HHP Community,

It is with deep sadness that we share that Dr. Josh Yellen passed away on Monday, January 23.

Dr. Yellen was a Clinical Associate Professor in the Masters of Athletic Training (MAT) Program at the University of Houston. He was the founding director of the MAT degree in the Health and Human Performance Department and was responsible for developing this program from the ground up in a relatively short amount of time.

Dr. Yellen will be fondly remembered by many. His students will remember him for his passion and dedication to training the next generation of athletic trainers. Dr. Yellen was proud of the success of his students and would not hesitate to tell you about how well his students performed on their certifying exams. His colleagues have many memories of his humor, honesty, compassion, and willingness to lend a hand.

Dr. Yellen was very active in professional and community organizations. He served on the National Athletic Trainer’s Association Professional Committee, was a site reviewer for the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education, and provided service for community events including the Houston Marathon and Ironman Texas.

Memorial arrangements for Dr. Yellen are pending. Please keep his loved ones in your thoughts.

Discovery Unlocks Potential of 'Special' Muscle

Dr. Marc Hamilton's pioneering discovery of the “soleus pushup” effectively elevates muscle metabolism for hours, even while sitting. The soleus muscle in the calf, though only 1% of your body weight, can do big things to improve the metabolic health in the rest of your body if activated correctly.

The soleus muscle in the calf can do big things to improve the metabolic health in the rest of your body if activated correctly. Now UH researchers are pioneering the “soleus pushup” which elevates muscle metabolism for hours, even while sitting.
