Hate "stickers" in your yard? Treat NOW to prevent the OW! You've still got time but the window is closing...

If you missed the preemergence timeframe in the fall, it’s time to turn to postemergence herbicides. Postemergence herbicides such as 2,4-D, simazine, dicamba, metsulfuron, mecoprop, fluroxypyr, or auxin containing formulations will get the job done. These should be applied in January, February, or March.

These herbicides can be found in products at your local garden store. Ask for help finding the right herbicide, and you’ll be right on track for a “sticker”-free lawn. Always read and follow label instructions when using these herbicides.

Walk Mississippi and Live Healthy … One Step at a Time is a 6-week, individual or team-based health and wellness challenge that encourages children, youth, and adults to increase physical activity and adopt healthier nutrition habits.

This no-cost program officially begins Oct. 11 and wraps up on Nov. 21.

The objective is for everyone who signs up to virtually walk 180 miles (the equivalent of the width of Mississippi), learn strategies and tips from MSU Extension’s Walk-a-Weigh wellness program, and improve dietary and lifestyle behaviors.

During each week of the program, participants will receive weekly emails from MSU Extension nutrition specialist Qula Madkin providing educational materials and video demonstrations on a range of health and wellness topics. Some topics will include building physical activity into each day, preparing healthy meals and reducing sugar and fat intake.

The Walk Mississippi web page includes an activity calculator that will automatically convert different types of exercise into miles for those who prefer fitness activities aside from walking. Participants will receive a survey link by email to record their activity for each day.
