HCSO-Mounted Patrol

HCSO-Mounted Patrol The Harris County SO- Mounted Patrol was formed under Sheriff Buster Kern in 1949 and continues the traditions today under Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Mounted Patrol was formed under Sheriff Buster Kern in 1949. The Mounted Patrol started out with all volunteers and was eventually transformed as a reserve function. The Reserve unit was utilized for missing persons, escaped prisoners, traffic and crowd control and ceremonial functions. During the Mid 80’s the Mounted Patrol saw an increase of full time deputies

participating and is now the predominate group amongst the members. Deputies and their mounts attend approximately 40 hours of school a year to maintain certification. Deputies are assigned as needed and directed by the Sheriff of Harris County.

Chief was proud to make an appearance at this year’s Tip-A-Cop fundraiser benefiting Special Olympics Texas!

Our favorite four legged deputy enjoyed meeting everyone who stopped by to support such an incredible cause. Events like Tip-A-Cop bring our community together to help provide year-round sports training and competition opportunities for Special Olympics athletes, and we’re grateful to everyone who came out to make a difference.

A big thank you to everyone who donated, visited with Chief, and helped support Special Olympics Texas. We appreciate your generosity and look forward to seeing you again next year!

When it’s too hot to trot… you head to the drive-thru!

Our Mounted Patrol deputies and their four-legged partners made a quick stop to cool off with a cold drink. We can’t confirm who enjoyed the stop more, the deputies or the horses!

A huge thank you to Chick-fil-A for welcoming our mounted team through the drive-thru. Your hospitality is greatly appreciated!

It is with a heavy heart that the Harris County Sheriff's Office extends our deepest condolences to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Doolittle, and the family of Deputy Erika Serrato following her tragic death in the line of duty.

Deputy Serrato, 24, was taken from us far too soon while courageously serving her community—directing traffic at the scene of a DWI crash on Interstate 45 early this morning. She gave her life protecting others, embodying the highest ideals of our profession. Her years of dedicated service will never be forgotten.

To our brothers and sisters in Montgomery County Sheriff's Office: know that Harris County stands with you. We grieve alongside you, we honor her sacrifice, and we remain committed to supporting you in any way needed. Our thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Serrato’s family, friends, fellow deputies, and all who loved her.

May God grant them strength and comfort during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Deputy Serrato. Your watch has ended, but your legacy of service endures.
