HCSO-Mounted Patrol
The Harris County SO- Mounted Patrol was formed under Sheriff Buster Kern in 1949 and continues the traditions today under Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.
(19)
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Mounted Patrol was formed under Sheriff Buster Kern in 1949. The Mounted Patrol started out with all volunteers and was eventually transformed as a reserve function. The Reserve unit was utilized for missing persons, escaped prisoners, traffic and crowd control and ceremonial functions. During the Mid 80’s the Mounted Patrol saw an increase of full time deputies participating and is now the predominate group amongst the members. Deputies and their mounts attend approximately 40 hours of school a year to maintain certification. Deputies are assigned as needed and directed by the Sheriff of Harris County.
Mission: The mission of the Harris County Sheriff's Office Mounted Patrol is to represent the Sheriff of Harris County in providing high visibility patrols in and around Harris County. Search for missing persons and other events as directed by the Sheriff.
Operating as usual

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Deputy Johnny Tunches, 56, who died on Tuesday after a courageous battle against COVID-19.
He is the third Sheriff's Office deputy to die after contracting COVID-19. Sergeant Raymond Scholwinski died on May 6 and Deputy Juan Menchaca died on June 13.
Deputy Tunches, 56, had been hospitalized for almost a month after contracting COVID-19. He was a 29-year veteran of HCSO and his most recent assignment was as a Contract Deputy in District 2. He began his service with the Harris County Sheriff's Office in 1991 and worked at the Inmate Processing Center (IPC).
“Our Sheriff’s Office family mourns the death of Deputy Johnny Tunches,” Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said. “Deputy Tunches served the people of Harris County with distinction. We were proud to call him our partner, and our friend. He will be missed terribly, and our condolences go out to his family and all those whose lives he touched.”
Deputy Tunches is survived by his wife and his three daughters.
Funeral arrangements for Deputy Tunches are pending.

A year ago today, Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal was shot multiple times while conducting a traffic stop in northwest Harris County.
Deputy Dhaliwal’s teammates describe him as being a vibrant and energetic deputy. He was known for his sense of humor and his ability to make personal connections with his fellow deputies and with the community he served.
Deputy Dhaliwal is the 45th Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputy to die in the line of duty.
Gone but never forgotten.

Today, we commemorate the 19th anniversary of 9/11 by paying tribute to the nearly 3,000 men, women, and children tragically killed in the September 11, 2001 terror attacks and the thousands of survivors. We honor the first responders who risked – and many times lost – their lives in their courageous efforts to save others.
We will always remember the pain and anguish of that horrific day, but we will never forget America’s renewed sense of solidarity, compassion, and resilience.

How to prepare your pets for a hurricane. Don’t wait until it’s too late, create your emergency plans now.
▫️ Know your area and consider flood patterns, driving routes, and neighboring farms. These factors can help you develop a better plan.
▫️ Take photos of your pets and livestock, including any identifying markings. Make sure to also take a photo with you in it to help with the identification process should you be separated.
▫️ For livestock, such as horses, create an identification card with your and the animal's information. Be sure it's waterproof and then braid it with string into the animal's mane.
▫️ Do not leave livestock tied or enclosed in a barn or structure during the storm. In the event of flooding or wind damage, your animal could be struck and seriously injured or worse.
▫️ If you need help call our Livestock Division at 832-927-2969 or 713-221-6000.
