How to teach kids about electronics through sewing

Lets get started early. Girls can play to.

If you’re looking for a child-friendly introduction to electronics, consider sewing. Yes, you read that correctly. Many teachers take this approach—whether it’s stitching circuits on a plush toy or weaving LEDs into a bookmark. As a DIY project, it’s safe, engaging, and versatile, plus it do...

Three Myths of Fiber Cleaning

This article has some very good ideas but fails to address a few important issues and technics.

1. It needs to be said that the wet / dry technique is just that. Moving directly from a damp spot on the lint free wipe will keep dissolved contaminates from redrying and leaving a film on the fiber

2. Using a 2.5mm cleaning stick in a 2.5mm hole when cleaning the patch panel side of a interconnect means the only movement available is a circular rotation. Think of it as an infinite number of circles growing smaller as you get nearer the center until the very center where the fiber core should be, there is no movement at all. When cleaning a 2.5mm ferrule I prefer using a 1.25mm stick allowing some side to side motion.

3. The above problem is easily solved by using what is called a “One Click”. It has a continuous roll of lint free tape 2.5mm or 1.25mm wide that swipes across the end of the ferrule in one direction and presents a new clean piece of tape with each application.

4. The most important part of the cleaning process is Inspection simply going through the cleaning process without knowing that you are successful is a recipe for failure.

Here’s what’s not a myth: Keeping fiber clean is critical to the long-term reliability of a network.

Greyson Knapp, FOT-OSP, founder and instructor of Apex Optics, attends the Offshore Technology Conference in Houston, TX. He's there with a colleague from LUMEN Digital who is allowing him to share booth space in order to spread the word about ETA International and its Fiber Optics certification portfolio. Many thanks, Greyson!

Dirty Connectors?
How does the trash get there?
When you remove the cap you draw it to the end of the ferrule created a static charge. This can draw particles to the tip of the ferrule Exactly where it can do the most harm.
What damage can be done to the fiber by a small particle?
1) The contaminant can reduce or eliminate the pressure between the fibers and cause increased back reflection. FTTH systems can be sensitive to this.
2) vibration and thermal stress can cause particles to move a perhaps dig into the fiber.
3) Unwelcome fluids could cause a wavelength selective attention (loss) in the connection skin oil and other contaminates can change over time.

Optical-to-acoustic microchip could boost data-center efficiency

Very interesting! I can think of some great applications but doesn't satisfy the real NEED FOR SPEED in data processing. Let think optical computing

Chips fed by photonics streams can be too fast for data processing. Scientists propose slowing the microprocessors by converting incoming light into slower sound waves.
