We are and daily at CSCD.
Check out this email from a client to her CSO Cooper!

"So I got my case dismissed! I was a day away from completing my IOP, they had me set to discharge later, but since Coach Valerie and Mrs. Vickie the court manager were there for me, the judge ended up dismissing my case and told me to email him my certificate when I got it!

I just wanted to thank you for being a part of my recovery and for supporting me. I don’t think I would have wanted to stay sober if it wasn’t for you. You showed me that you truly cared and wanted me to be the best me.

Since I got off probation, I finished saving up for a cash car, and I made a deal with my GM and my district manager for my job, if I got a car they would promote me to General Manager. I accepted their offer yesterday and will start my new position with salary and PTO next Monday!! I still haven’t gotten my daughter back, but I haven’t given up yet.. I spend every chance I get with my son and he has been my “why”. I’ve moved from Oxford into an apartment with my 10+ year friend who is a flight attendant for United and I’ve gotten on the right medications that help me succeed.

I just wanted to update you on my life and tell you are amazing and anyone who gets you as a PO is so lucky. Thank you for everything! Love and miss you!! I hope you’re doing well?"

From CSO M. Fraslin:

"Mr. M was placed on a RIC FPTI program on 9/14/2022, completed a CAST assessment, intensive outpatient treatment followed by supportive outpatient treatment, and provided negative drug screens. He was early terminated from his supervision because he was able to show he had the tools, knowledge, and desire to maintain a sober lifestyle, abstain from alcohol and methamphetamine use, and continue to be a productive citizen in society. Congratulations!"

"Ms. M was placed on a RIC FPTI program on 6/3/2022, completed a CAST assessment, intensive outpatient treatment followed by supportive outpatient, provided negative drug screens, and was successfully discharged from supervision. She was able to obtain employment at a chemcial plant earning the highest salary she’s ever had which allowed her to financially support her 3, 16, and 17-year old children. From CSO M. Scott:

"I want to acknowledge my client JT for successfully completing residential treatment with WHO-A and residential Aftercare with Gateway. The Harris County STAR Drug Court now has a pen pal program located 7,421 miles across the globe in Auckland, New Zealand.

Last week, Judge Dianne Partridge, of the North Shore District Court in Auckland, attended a STAR team staffing and Drug Court Docket to gain insight into how best practices are utilized here in Texas. She was in town to attend the annual National Association of Drug Court Professionals Conference.

New Zealand has a population of 5.1 million people, and Judge Partridge is one of six Drug Court Judges that preside over one of only three Drug Courts in the entire country. Comparatively, Harris County boasts a population of 4.7 million with four Drug Courts and four judges.

According to Judge Partridge, “the collaborative pre-court team discussions were interesting and powerful, and it was lovely to witness the authentic interactions between Judge Lacayo and each of the participants, showing the real connection and mutual respect. It is also reassuring to see the effectiveness of these processes so similar to those that I use. The fact that some of the staff volunteer your time is mind-blowing, but a testament to your belief and dedication to this wonderful court.”

Thank you CSOs C. Hood and S. Rushing and all of our employees who make a difference everyday. We are and .

Check out these emails Hood and Rushing recently received.

Good evening C. Hood,
I just wanted to say thank you. These last past 5 years has been full of many ups and downs, however, meeting you has totally changed my outlook on life. I deeply and sincerely appreciate the words of encouragement and advice given from all of you. Unfortunately there will be many that will come through your case load that will still try to buck the system, but you actually gave me hope. In the beginning, I was homeless and probably headed to a grave, and now I’m in the process of purchasing a new home with a decent job, a total 180 from where I started. I thank God for you and hope to see you around, just never under these circumstances again!!!!! May God bless all of you, BJ

To S. Rushing
Just wanted to say I miss you and thank you!! I just bought a cash car and I had a deal with my GM and district manager if I got a car they would promote me to General Manager of my own store. I just accepted their offer yesterday and will start with my new salary next week!! I still don’t have Jordyn back yet but I haven’t given up. I moved from Oxford into an apartment with my friend who is working as a flight attendant for United Airlines. Thank you for never giving up on me or putting me in jail lol! Love you and miss you, A.

A story from CLO K Haralson. Judge Gray amended client's conditions and I went back to the hold over to have her sign them. I did not know at the time the client was transgender so before I started our conversation I asked how she would like to be addressed so that I can show her respect and build rapport with the client. When I asked the client how she would like to be addressed, the client seemed to be taken back but did not say anything. The following week the client came to court and asked for me. I thought maybe I had forgot to give her something or she had questions regarding her supervision. The client just wanted to say thank you for treating her like a person and not treating her badly. She wanted to let me know that treating her the way I did stayed with her after she was released from jail. The client stated that “you have no idea how much that meant to me”. This really showed me that no matter where you are in life it pays to treat others with kindness and respect.

Way to go CSO E. Shanks! Our team of probation officers not only and but they SAVE LIVES!

"Mr. W has been on supervision since July 15, 2021. He continued to struggle and wasnt making an effort to participate in his treatment programs. His CSO recommended that he would benefit from a community inpatient treatment program to gain the tools needed to address his substance use. Mr. Williams entered the Cheyenne Center on January 12, 2023 and completed the program on February 23, 2023. Mr. W has completely turn around by utilizing the relapse prevention tools he gained from the Cheyenne Center, attending support group meetings, and making friends with people who are also in recovery. Mr. W. has submitted all negative UA’s since completion of the inpatient treatment program. Mr. W. found his self-worth and wanted more for himself that he enrolled in Commercial Drivers License (CDL) school and received the CDL certification on March 7, 2023 along with receiving CDL TXID. He was very proud presenting in the certificate!

Mr. W stated that I saved his life. This is the highest compliment to receive from a client. We are making a difference and I am personally proud of Mr. W and his accomplishments."

Specialty Court Branch Director MaShala Dixon and STAR Court Manager Keith Liles represented Harris County at the recent two-day NADCP State Infrastructure Training at Sam Houston State University.

It was a great opportunity to look at how well your specialty court was functioning through understanding team roles and responsibilities, addressing ongoing changes to the team, how to best facilitate various personalities and perspectives, and assessing performance. Hands-on practice of teambuilding exercises, engagement techniques, and establishing team goals and objectives allowed participants to return to their courts with innovative ideas as well as suggestions on how to make necessary upgrades to their team experience.

Many of our clients do not have a cellphone or tablet which makes it difficult to find jobs and/or continue their education. CSCD has teamed up with www.lifewireless.com to get them free phones and tablets - which helps our clients make a turn in the right direction. We offered this service at our South Region Tuesday. We will be at our North Region from 9am to 11am Thursday.

Congratulations to our very own Kim Luis! She was awarded the Governor’s Judge Carroll Wilborn award in Austin! She was recognized for having a strong, positive impact in the community, providing guidance and support while promoting positive personal growth with our clients. Ms. Luis focuses on individual successes of each of her clients, no matter how big or small. She recognizes the havoc that addiction can wreak on individuals and their families and treats each client in her care with respect and dignity. She tirelessly works to instill hope in them for a greater future, away from the Criminal Justice system. Ms. Luis is an extraordinary example of a Community Supervision Officer who is an "agent of change." She is a true asset to Harris County Community Supervision and Corrections Department.

CSCD ROCKS!

We wanted to share and celebrate our officer Kimberly Luis! She has selflessly served the clients here in Harris County for 20 years, motivating them towards achieving their goals of sobriety. She has been a great asset to our RIC Court team and staff.

Kim is also the recipient of the Judge Carroll Wilborn Award, and is a TDCJ/Governor’s Criminal Justice Volunteer Award. It recognizes contributions by a community corrections volunteer or volunteer organization. Volunteers have a strong, positive impact in the community, providing guidance and support while promoting positive personal growth. She will receive her award on 4/21/2023 in Austin, TX.

Today, we also celebrated Shanna Rushing who has provided over 15 years of service to Harris County. Ms. Rushing has been instrumental in working with clients out of our RIC court and helping them through their journey of sobriety.

Congratulations to both employees. You inspire us and make us want to be better everyday!

Another Success Story!

We had a 22-year-old female client on for Felony POCS on our RIC Docket. Ms. M. lived in Midland TX, but would travel to Harris Co., monthly for her visits not missing any meeting except for when she contacted COVID. Ms. M. recently was put out her mother's home, due to their poor relationship. Ms. M. became homeless, jobless, but NONE OF THESE OBSTACLES stopped her from complying with her PTI court agreement. CSO Taylor recognized her client's determination to succeed on supervision and decided to petition the court to consider Early Termination, which was granted. By the way Ms. M. only tested positive once after being on supervision for 10 months and was testing just about monthly. Way to go!!!!!!

Each graduating class of the STAR Drug Court Program is charged with developing and executing a community service project. Past graduates have opted to clean up a civil war cemetery, volunteering at the Houston Food Bank, providing holiday entertainment at a local nursing home and attending 12 step events to spread the message of recovery. When it came time for the December 2022 class, they were considering their options and then the disastrous tornado in January tore through the cities of Pasadena and Deer Park leaving destruction behind. The STAR Alumni jumped into action and collected approximately 50 bags of clothing, non-perishable food items and hygiene products which were donated to the Pasadena Red Cross.

2023 DWI Conference is over and our very own Harris County team and team members swept the board and brought back some trophies! Judge Walker and Court team 11 won the team award and CSO Luis Moreno won the team member award. It was really nice seeing Harris County represent with all the efforts that we do! Along with the winnings, we learned a lot of new incentives and sanctions we cannot wait to help introduce to the program!

On Monday, March 6, the first quarter2023 STAR Drug Court Graduation was held and a standing-room-only crowd at the Court of Appeals celebrated ten graduates and three early terminations. This group of superSTARS combined for over 3,000 hours of substance use treatment and joined their predecessors for a total of 796 graduates of the STAR Program.

Former October 2017 STAR Graduate Jessica Yeager, who currently serves as the Director of Peer Support Services at the UT HEROES Program, served as the keynote speaker. We look forward to seeing all of the great milestones that this class of graduates achieve during their next six months in the Alumni Association.

The next graduation of the Success Through Addiction Recovery will be held on Monday, June 5 at 3pm in the Court of Appeals.

Our CSOs are really Agents of Change! Check out these messages to CSO Michael C!

"I just wanted to send this thank you card, to let you know just how much you helped me while I was on probation. You always treated me like a human being that just made an awful mistake. You always greeted me with a smile and always listened to what I had to say, no matter what it was about. You are just a such a very nice, sweet person who just does his job, but you also treat people with respect. Please thank the judge also, the day you called me and told me I was no longer on probation was one of the happiest days in my life. I got my letter last week, Thanks again You still are the Best Probation Officer." from Ms. B."

"I would like to bring to your attention the exceptional service you do at your job. It was a privledge to work with someone so helpful and committed to getting individuals who have made mistakes and gotten into some trouble on the right path and guided to the right side of the road. Your kindness and patience makes all the difference.," from T.

Ms. G was placed on a RIC FPTI program one year ago. She completed a CAST assessment, residential treatment program, outpatient treatment program, and provided negative drug screens. Ms. G attends 2 to 3 12-step meetings weekly, speaks with her sponsor several times a week, and runs a sober living home for women! This amazing woman has shown she has the tools, knowledge, and desire to maintain a sober lifestyle and continue to be a productive citizen in society. Because of her hard work she was She was early teriminated from probation! Congrats Ms. G and everyone at CSCD who helped her along the way.

One of our clients praised CSO Elmer M for his encouraging words. She’s currently on probation for her third DWI conviction, has struggled with Opioid addiction and has picked up 3 additional DWI charges. CSO M. assigned her to the SACC Caseload while her MRP is pending, and she has done well. She hasn’t tested positive for any illegal drugs in the last 4 months, has successfully completed IOP and is currently attending SOP. On her last court setting last week, she informed the court that her CSO's encouraging words helped her realize that she needed to stay sober to care for her 5 children and she credited him for helping her make that decision.
