This was posted on Third ward Next Door Good to read It seems a lot of crime centered issues are posted on ND. Plus a lot of frustration about how those things are dealt with by our community and government. I wanted to give my $.02 about how I feel those issues are best dealt with…….IMO through the combined effort of residents who have a common goal. I think Community residential civic organizations are a valuable asset to consider. I realize that many Civic associations suspend their meetings over the summer but I want to raise awareness that joining and becoming active in your local neighborhood association is a huge positive step for the entire Community. Residents coming together, banding together have a better chance of solving a community problem than residents that try to fight those problems alone. I am an advocate for participating in your local neighborhood civic association. You can become engaged in your community, embrace a civic responsibility, earn social currency geeeeeeeeeee even develop a networking vehicle for yourself and other civic leaders. You can arrange for Government officials to address your organization and have face to face Q&A to bring awareness of local problems. There are many preconceived even distorted notions of what a Civic association is…..or isn’t. But until you can attend 3 or 4 meetings you won’t be able to evaluate the merits of your civic association. It’s easy to grumble that Civic organizations have become staid, but new members and enthusiastic involvement will energize any organization. These organizations depend on volunteers. Volunteering is a time commitment in your life where most schedules are very full. It is a personal decision to try and balance involvement in your community with the other commitments in your life. Still, wouldn’t everyone like to feel that becoming involved towards dealing with the community problems we discuss on ND could/ will actually make a difference? IMO A neighborhood Civic organization allows you to express your desires for your neighborhood and hear the perspectives of your neighbors. You can spotlight neighborhood passions with others that share the same. You can have the common goal of making your neighborhood a safer place. Together, neighbors in a civic association can weld power to change things for the better. The opportunity is there to empower yourself and other residents to have a voice, and work toward achieving a common neighborhood goal; like safety, crime prevention, of course but also walkability, quality of life, beautification, historical preservation or just the opportunity to get to know your neighbors and develop a sense of belonging. Gathering at these civic meetings allows you to promote friendship, reduce and diffuse conflict and foster a sense of concern and caring among people you live close to. A robust neighborhood civic organization can create open communications networks with government officials, businesses, and other civic groups, making them partners in your neighborhood and all working towards a stronger community. => National Night Out is the first Tuesday in October. Look for the event your Civic association is sponsoring--- attend and brainstorm with other residents on best way to fight crime, promote safety and improve our neighborhoods.
