Houston Community Services Through discussion of first hand experiences, it was decided that the best method to address the problems, was to establish a community center.

Houston Community Services (HCS) is a private non-profit, tax exempt organization with a primary constituency of Latinos. HCS was founded in 1974 by 12 University of Houston students, who came together to discuss various problems faced by the Latina/o community of Houston, most of whom reside in the East End. The center would serv

e as a clearinghouse to inform and educate the community. Thus HCS was incorporated in 1975, with three primary missions: 1) to establish a social service center; 2) to promote cultural and educational enrichment; and 3) to engage in economic development activities. Houston Community Services (HCS) es una organización privada sin fines de lucro, exenta de impuestos, con una comunidad primaria de latinos. HCS fue fundada en 1974 por 12 estudiantes de la Universidad de Houston, quienes se reunieron para discutir varios problemas enfrentados por la comunidad latina de
Houston, la mayoría de los cuales residen en el East End. A través de la discusión de experiencias de primera mano, se decidió que el mejor método para los problemas era establecer un centro comunitario. El centro servirá como centro de información y educación para la comunidad. Así HCS fue constituida en 1975, con tres misiones primarias: 1) establecer un centro de servicios sociales; 2) promover el desarrollo cultural y enriquecimiento; Y 3) participar en actividades de desarrollo económico.
