Although this organization may be fairly new, Connie is no stranger to adversity. She grew up being witness to and victim of physical, verbal, emotional, and substance abuse. She was bullied, neglected, and abandoned many times in her childhood and throughout her life. This caused her to suffer from depression, identity issues, low self-esteem, body image issues, and feelings of loneliness, dispar
ity, and hopelessness. After becoming an adult, she realized that she was unfortunately following in the same footsteps and repeating the same destructive behaviors that she had been subjected to as a child. She knew she wanted to do better, but she just didn’t know where to start or what to do and she didn’t have anyone to ask for help or give her the support that she needed to change her situation. She was on her own. Connie was determined to break the cycle of dysfunction and poverty that she was born into so she enrolled herself into college courses and worked several jobs to provide for herself and her son. She knew God had destined her for something greater so she could not give up despite the many obstacles she faced. Today, Ms. Citizen has her Bachelors of Science in psychology from the University of Phoenix and she is currently pursuing her Masters of Social Work degree at Simmons College. She is also a Certified Christian Counselor and a Certified Community Health Worker. Through the experiences of her own life, Connie is dedicated to providing the support system for young adults that she never had. She is grateful for her own testimony because she can relate to what these young people are going through. She believes that there are many more young people out there who may be seeking a change in their lives and just need the education and empowerment to help get them there. She is very hands on with the daily operations of Reinforcing Houston and is passionate about improving the lives of the at-risk youths and young adults in her community. Connie, along with everyone on the Reinforcing Houston team, is passionate and dedicated to the mission of empowering, educating, and inspiring teens and young adults to be reach their full potential despite their past and present circumstances. Sometimes it takes having a strong support system to show someone that they really do have what it takes to succeed and that their life matters. This is an immense task and no one person can do it alone. It’s going to take all of us working together to help guide and reinforce Houston’s youth!
