Friendly reminder 2nd half taxes are due by Monday, May 11th, 2026. For your convenience, we have a drop box at the handicapped entrance on the west side of the courthouse INSIDE the foyer. It is available 24/7. We also accept postmark date for those using mail service or you can pay online at https://www.kansas.gov/propertytax

Elk County Treasurer’s Office is accepting applications for an office clerk. Qualified candidates MUST BE reliable, dependable & possess following skills: learn quickly with attention to detail, basic knowledge of cash receipting/disbursement functions, strong computer & customer service skills, & ability to adapt in high demand situations. Duties include answering phones, assisting customers, registering motor vehicles, collecting tax payments, processing driver’s licenses & balancing county funds daily. Must pass drug test & background check. This is a full-time position with excellent benefits. Interested candidates should submit a county employment application to Elk County Treasurer and may attach a resume if desired. Applications can be found on the county website www.elkcountyks.org OR at the Treasurer’s office in the courthouse located at 127 N Pine, Howard KS. Elk County is EOE.

Elk County Tax Foreclosure Sale today 9-16-25 at 1:00 pm Cox Building, 100 W Washington in Howard. You must be registered to bid - NO registration on site. All registrations must be done at the Treasurer's office in the Elk County Courthouse, 127 N Pine, Howard.
If you intend to bid, please stop by our office first to get registered. Sale will begin promptly at 1:00pm!

8/19/25 FYI-
Widespread issues with AT&T circuits are affecting multiple counties with motor vehicle & driver's license transactions. AT&T is working on the issue but we have no timetable on a resolution.
Please plan accordingly & expect delays. This is an example of why you shouldn't wait until the last day to renew. Some things are out of our control and technical issues happen OFTEN these days.

The Elk County Tax Foreclosure Sale will be held Tuesday, September 16, 2025 at the Cox Building in Howard KS beginning at 1:00 pm.
Pre-registration WILL BE REQUIRED and will be open from September 2nd at 9:00 am - Sept 15th at 4:00 pm. No sooner!
More information will be posted at a later date when it becomes available. You can view the parcel list on the county website at www.elkcountyks.org. Scroll down to find the link under 'Helpful Links'. Owners still have the opportunity to redeem their property until the day prior to the sale and we will update the site as necessary.

The REAL ID ("gold star") deadline is MAY 7th, 2025. WE ARE CURRENTLY TAKING APPOINTMENTS FOR DRIVER'S LICENSE SERVICES AS ARE MOST DL OFFICES IN THE STATE. PLEASE CALL OUR OFFICE IN ADVANCE TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT FOR A DRIVER'S LICENSE/ID!! 620-374-2256

REAL ID is not new. The REAL ID Act was signed into law in 2005 and initially scheduled to take effect in 2008 but has been delayed multiple times. It was a response to the 9/11 terrorists attacks, aiming to enhance security & help prevent unauthorized individuals from obtaining false DLs or IDs. We do not set the guidelines, we simply follow them as required by law. Please be kind to courthouse staff who are trying their best to assist you.
