How high is your mountain? Yesterday we climbed two small 4 inch tall mountains. Doesn't sound like much but we went up with very old very heavy bank safes! Someone had this idea to move the 2 safes in the store room out into the vault for display! Simple in thought, not so simple to accomplish. It took 7 hours to maneuver the first one into place. A mere hour and half for the second! Moving that much weight uphill when even a pallet jack couldn't move it up the incline required some wild brainstorming. Finally in place now to finish the display!

Miner County Historical Society and the Howard Public Library, along with the SD Humanities Council are hosting this year’s One Book South Dakota discussion on Sunday, October 25, 2026 at 2:00 at the Miner County Rural Life Museum. This year people all over South Dakota are reading the same book, A Biography of a Mountain by Matthew Davis. It is an available for check out at the Howard Public Library. See you there!

Connie Blanchard, formerly from Howard (a Howard High School graduate in 1969) has completed extensive research on historic World War II sites in Europe, on troop movements during World War II and on N**i extermination camps.

On Sunday, September 27 at 2 p.m., she will provide a program on her research at the Rural Life Museum. Her presentation will focus on her trips to Auschwitz plus Normandy Beach and Toulon, which were major landing points for American troops during World War II.

During her presentation, she will also talk about Miner County veterans who were killed during World War II, particularly those killed during the Battle of Normandy, which started on June 6, 1944 and which became known as D-Day during Operation Overlord.

The presentation is open to the public. The museum is located at 217 S. Main in Howard, SD.
