Today we remember the heroes who never made it home.

The men and women who gave their tomorrows for our freedom, our families, our traditions, and every moment we often take for granted.

As we gather with loved ones, enjoy a day at the beach, attend a parade, or share a meal together, let us pause to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

Raise a glass, fly the flag, and hold your loved ones a little closer today.

Land of the free because of the brave. ❤️🤍💙🇺🇸

This past week, the Schoharie County Mounted Unit attended National Police Week in Washington, D.C., proudly representing Schoharie County during memorial events honoring the families of fallen law enforcement officers from across the country.

In addition to participating in memorial services on the National Mall and at the United States Capitol alongside mounted units from around the nation — totaling more than 100 horses — several days of specialized training were conducted at Manassas Battlefield, Frying Pan Farm Park, and Herndon, Virginia.

The training included engaging targets with a firearm from horseback, drone response training, obstacle and desensitization training for mounted units, and equitation instruction. Deputy Sheriff Scott Claus also served as a co-instructor alongside members of the Los Angeles Police Department, teaching mounted crowd control techniques to fellow law enforcement officers.

Following the memorial events and training sessions, deputies participated in two days of interagency mounted competitions, including dressage, western equitation, uniform inspection, and obstacle course events.

Competing against up to 40 riders in some classes, Deputy Claus earned 5th place in uniform inspection, 6th place in dressage, 2nd place in western equitation, and 7th place in the obstacle course competition. His combined scores across all events resulted in an impressive 5th place overall finish.

We are proud of Deputy Claus for his professionalism, dedication, and outstanding representation of the Schoharie County Sheriff’s Office during National Police Week.

Schoharie County Sheriff’s Office Memorial Ceremony

In honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day, we paused to honor and remember the members of the Schoharie County Sheriff’s Office who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our county and its residents.

Sheriff Henry Steadman - End of Watch: July 17, 1930

Deputy Sheriff Loren Veley - End of Watch: September 8, 1912

Deputy Sheriff William Huddleston - End of Watch: October 9, 1818

Three men. Three eras. One enduring legacy.

Each answered the call to serve. Each faced violence in the performance of that duty. And each gave his life in service to the people of Schoharie County.

Their names are forever memorialized on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., the New York State Police Officers Memorial in Albany, and on the memorial plaque outside the Harvey E. Stoddard Public Safety Facility.

Today, we were humbled to stand alongside current and retired members of our Office, including past Sheriffs and Undersheriffs, friends, and family as we honored their memory and reflected on their courage, dedication, and commitment to protecting others.

Their service reminds us that freedom, safety, and community often come at a tremendous cost — one carried by those willing to answer the call no matter the danger. We remain forever grateful and forever indebted to these fallen heroes.

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

Congratulations to our very own Rebecca Brisley on being named a Times Journal Top 5 Changemaker in the “Women” category! In addition to being an experienced emergency service provider and leader within the Communications Division of the Sheriff’s Office, Rebecca also supports charitable endeavors in her free time such as the Lexington ARC.

“Becky's love and compassion for her community, as well as for the men and women serving in fire, law enforcement, and EMS, are evident in everything she does. Her ability to remain calm under pressure and lead with grace has earned the respect of both emergency personnel and residents throughout the county.”

The Sheriff’s Office participated in a fun-filled and educational morning at Middleburgh High School on Wednesday! The Middleburgh SADD chapter invited us to be apart of a pre-prom season awareness event. We conducted a mock crash which included a DWI arrest, extrication of a passenger by the Fire Department and treatment and transport of patients by EMS. Additionally, students were able to participate in a whole host of activities afterward, including educational booths, a driving simulator, and a BAC goggle obstacle course.
We would like to thank MCS and the Middleburgh SADD chapter for involving us and for hosting the event. Thanks also to the Schoharie County Probation Department, Middleburgh and West Fulton Fire Departments, the Schoharie County Council on Alcohol and Substance Abuse, Schoharie County EMS, A&M Towing and last but certainly not least, Eilene Fisher for her moulage work on our “patients”! Thank you all for helping to make this event impactful and successful.
