πŸ–€ Honoring Chief Douglas O'Dell Foster πŸ–€

The Howey-in-the-Hills Police Department extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Chief Douglas O'Dell Foster.

Chief Foster dedicated his life to public service and the protection of others. He served as the Police Chief of Umatilla, Florida. He led the department with professionalism, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to his community. Throughout his more than two decades leading the Umatilla Police Department, Chief Foster earned the respect and admiration of fellow officers, public servants, and the citizens he faithfully served.

This June, during National PTSD Awareness Month, the Howey-in-the-Hills Police Department wants our veterans and all members of our community to know β€” you are not alone.

If you are struggling, hurting, overwhelmed, or need someone to listen, please reach out. We are here to support, help heal, and honor those who have served our nation and community with courage and sacrifice.

There is strength in speaking up, and there is hope in knowing others care. Together, we stand beside our veterans β€” not just today, but every day. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ’š

πŸ’™ Building a More Inclusive Community πŸ’™

The Howey-in-the-Hills Police Department continues to demonstrate its commitment to serving all members of our community through autism-informed initiatives designed to promote understanding, communication, and positive interactions.

In partnership with Autism Hero Project, which generously provided Autism Sensory Kits for our patrol vehicles, our officers are better equipped to support individuals with autism and other sensory-related needs during law enforcement encounters.

The department is also proud to participate in the Blue Envelope Program, provide Autism Occupant Vehicle Decals, and distribute informational resources that help individuals and families communicate important information during traffic stops and other interactions with law enforcement.

Each patrol vehicle now carries an Autism Sensory Kit containing a variety of sensory-friendly tools, fidgets, and calming items designed to help reduce anxiety and provide comfort during stressful situations.

To further strengthen these efforts, all officers are scheduled to receive additional autism-informed law enforcement training, ensuring we continue to learn, grow, and better serve every member of our community.

This is what community-centered policing looks likeβ€”leading with compassion, understanding, and inclusion.

Thank you to Autism Hero Project and all of our community partners who help make these initiatives possible. Together, we are building stronger relationships and creating a safer, more welcoming community for everyone.

πŸ’™ Because every interaction matters.
πŸ’™ Because every person deserves to be understood.
πŸ’™ Because inclusion starts with awareness.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Memorial Day – A Promise We Keep Every Day πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Today, the Howey in the Hills Police Department honors the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

Memorial Day is not just a day off. It is not just a moment in time.
It is a lifelong responsibility.

Freedom was never given; it was earned, defended, and paid for by those who never came home.

We remember them.
We honor them.
We carry their legacy forward.

Not just today, but every single day.

Let this be a reminder to live with gratitude, to stand with purpose, and to never forget the cost of the freedoms we enjoy.

Because honoring them isn’t a one-day act…
It’s something we carry for the rest of our existence.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈWe will never forget. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
