Today officially kicked off the first day of EMS Week, and what an incredible way to start the week! ❤️🚑

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped make today’s EMS Open House such a success!

We hope everyone enjoyed the good food, great conversations, hands-on activities, and the opportunity to learn more about EMS and emergency preparedness within our community.

We are incredibly grateful to:

• Nutrien for donating the water

We also want to recognize our amazing EMS staff who helped make today possible — Jordan R., Tracy P., Stacey B., Garrett K., Justine W., Jen C., and Justin L. Thank you all for giving your time, educating the community, and helping everything run smoothly throughout the day.

A very special thank you also goes out to the spouses, families, and loved ones of our EMS staff. Your support behind the scenes, willingness to help, and understanding of the long hours and dedication required in EMS does not go unnoticed. Today would not have been possible without your help and support as well.

We also appreciate everyone from across the community who took time out of their weekend to come support local EMS, learn new skills, and help make today a success.

Most importantly — thank you to our community for showing up, supporting us, and taking the time to learn more about EMS, CPR, AEDs, Stop the Bleed, and emergency preparedness. In a small town, it truly takes everyone working together, and today was a perfect example of that.

Good Morning! I know most everyone will be out cleaning up after last nights storm! When you get hungry, stop by the Hoxie EMS Station for lunch. We will have FREE food and refreshments, hotdogs, chips and cookies.

There’s something very small-town-and-beautiful about watching a whole county quietly shift into “protect our people” mode when the sky starts acting mean. The ambulances staged outside the station ready to respond. Dispatch lighting up. Fire and law enforcement out storm spotting in the dark. Neighbors checking on neighbors. Everybody stepping up to do their part without hesitation. That’s what makes rural communities special.

Tonight Sheridan County saw multiple rounds of severe weather, including a tornado warning impacting central Sheridan County and the Hoxie area. There was reports of damage, downed power lines, and dangerous weather conditions throughout the county.

During the warning, Sheridan County EMS crews took proactive operational measures by moving ambulances outside of the station and positioning them for rapid response in the event the station or town sustained a direct hit. This ensured crews could continue responding to emergencies no matter the situation.

And even after the warning and storms passed, our crews continued responding to 911 emergencies throughout the night. That dedication does not go unnoticed. Tonight, first responders across Sheridan County left their own families at home to help protect and serve their neighbors during dangerous conditions.

We also want to recognize:• Sheridan County Fire Departments for their storm spotting efforts• Sheridan County law enforcement agencies for their assistance and storm monitoring• Our dispatch center for keeping responders and the public informed throughout the evening

Tonight was a true example of a small town coming together. We are proud to serve a community where people still step up for one another when it matters most.

🚑 REMINDER: Sheridan County EMS Open House is THIS SUNDAY! 🚑

Join us Sunday from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM at the Sheridan County EMS Station for our EMS Week Open House!

Come meet your local EMS providers, tour the ambulances, practice hands-only CPR, learn Stop the Bleed basics, see AED demonstrations, and enjoy free hot dogs, chips, cookies, and drinks!

For everyone’s safety during the event:
• Please supervise children at all times
• Please do not touch equipment unless instructed by EMS staff
• Use caution around emergency vehicles and equipment
• Watch your step when entering/exiting ambulances
• Participation in demonstrations and activities is voluntary

We look forward to seeing the community come together and learn more about local emergency medical services.

🚑 Sheridan County EMS – April 2026 Call Statistics 🚑

During the month of April, Sheridan County EMS responded to 11 total calls for service, including:

• 2 flight transports
• 1 standby assignment for a possible fire incident
• 1 long-distance interfacility transport from Citizens Medical Center

In addition to emergency responses, our crews also remained active in community education and training by providing multiple CPR classes and conducting in-house staff training to continue improving patient care and emergency readiness throughout Sheridan County.

Sheridan County EMS also had to decline 2 long-distance transfer requests during April — one from AmberMed and one from Citizens Medical Center. These requests were declined due to staffing availability and the need to ensure adequate ambulance coverage remained available for 911 emergencies within Sheridan County.

As a rural EMS service, balancing interfacility transfers while maintaining emergency response coverage for our communities is one of the biggest challenges we face. While we always want to assist our healthcare partners whenever possible, our first responsibility is ensuring emergency crews remain available for residents and visitors within Sheridan County should a 911 emergency occur.

We appreciate the continued support from our communities, healthcare partners, and volunteers as we work together to provide emergency medical services across Sheridan County.

🚑 Sheridan County EMS Staffing Model Explained 🚑

We often get questions about how our service is staffed, so we wanted to give the community a clear picture of how coverage works across Sheridan County.

📍 Two Stations, One Mission

* Hoxie Station: Staffed 24/7 with an on-call crew
* Selden Station: Not regularly staffed, but supported by dedicated local volunteers who respond when available

👨‍⚕️ Full-Time Staffing (Hoxie)

* 1 Director/Paramedic
* 2 Advanced EMTs
* Together, they provide 120 hours of coverage each week

⏰ Total Coverage Needs (Hoxie)

* We staff 3 crew members per day, 24/7
* That equals 504 total staffing hours per week

🤝 Volunteer Support (Hoxie)

* After our full-time staff cover 120 hours, that leaves 384 hours per week
* These remaining hours are filled by our dedicated volunteers, who play a critical role in keeping EMS available across the county

Like many rural EMS services across the country, we’ve seen a gradual decline in volunteer availability over time, which makes the commitment of our current team even more valuable.

🚑 Expanding Advanced Care
Sheridan County EMS is also working to increase Advanced Life Support (ALS) coverage to better serve our citizens, especially during critical emergencies. Historically, ALS-level care—including certain medications and advanced skills—was limited due to a lack of equipment and resources. We have made significant progress in building those capabilities and continue working toward providing more consistent ALS care when it matters most.
