This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. Their courage, selflessness, and unwavering commitment to protecting the freedoms we enjoy today will never be forgotten.

We also recognize the families, friends, and loved ones who carry the weight of that sacrifice every day. Their strength and resilience deserve our deepest respect and gratitude.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is urging drivers to buckle up ahead of the Click It or Ticket seat belt safety campaign. The national high-visibility seat belt enforcement effort, which coincides with the Memorial Day holiday, runs May 18-31, 2026.

Seat belt use should be an automatic habit for drivers and passengers alike, during the Click It or Ticket campaign, Hubbard-Donald-Aurora Police Department will be working with our fellow law enforcement officers across local and state lines to ensure the message gets out to drivers and passengers. Not buckling up could mean a ticket, or worse, risking a life.

In 2024, there were 9,758 unbuckled passenger vehicle occupants killed in traffic crashes. The national seat belt use rate in 2024 was 91.2%, which is good — but it can be better. The other 8.8% still need to be reminded that seat belts save lives. Participating law enforcement agencies will be taking a no-excuses approach to seat belt law enforcement, writing citations day and night.

One of the focuses of the Click It or Ticket seat belt campaign is nighttime enforcement. NHTSA data shows a higher number of unrestrained occupant fatalities happen at night (56% between the hours of 6 p.m. and 5:59 a.m.). Of the males killed in crashes in 2023, more than half (53%) were unrestrained. For females killed in crashes, 41% were not buckled up.

Buckle Up the Right Way
• Place the shoulder belt across the middle of the chest and away from the neck.
• Lay the lap belt across the hips and not the stomach.
• NEVER place the seat belt behind the back or under arms.
We are asking friends and family to remind each other to buckle up in the front and back seats and to consider changing their habits if they don’t. Seat belts save lives, and everyone — front seat and back, child and adult — needs to remember to buckle up.

During National Police Week, the Hubbard-Donald-Aurora Police Department honors the law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty and recognizes the dedication and service of officers across the country who work each day to keep our communities safe.
National Police Week was established in 1962 when President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which it falls as National Police Week. Since then, communities across the nation have come together each year to recognize the service and sacrifice of law enforcement professionals.
Behind every badge is a person — a neighbor, parent, spouse, friend, coach, volunteer, or mentor — who has chosen a career of service to others. Police officers often work long hours, miss holidays and family events, and respond to people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Their commitment to protecting and serving the community requires compassion, professionalism, and resilience every day.
This week serves as a reminder of the courage, dedication, and humanity demonstrated by law enforcement personnel and the families who support them. We are grateful for the trust and partnership of our community as we continue our mission of service, integrity, honor, respect and public safety.
Please join the Hubbard-Donald-Aurora Police Department in remembering the fallen, supporting the families they left behind, and thanking those who proudly serve.

During National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week 2026, April 12-18, we proudly recognize and honor the incredible dispatchers at METCOM and throughout who serve our community.

Behind every call for help is a calm, steady voice guiding the response. Our dispatchers are the first first responders, working around the clock to ensure officers, fire, and EMS units have the critical information they need to protect and serve.

Your professionalism, resilience, and dedication often go unseen, but they are never unappreciated. The sacrifices you make and the composure you maintain in high-stress moments are nothing short of extraordinary.

On behalf of our entire Hubbard-Donald-Aurora Police Department, thank you for your service, your partnership, and your unwavering commitment to our community and region. We are grateful to stand alongside you.

Keep tabs on the road and not on your phone!

Distracted driving has become a deadly epidemic on our roads. Cell phone use — specifically, texting, talking, and social media use — has become the most common distraction. Other risky actions include adjusting the radio or GPS, applying makeup, eating and drinking. By driving distracted, you’re robbing yourself of seconds that you may need to avoid a close call or deadly crash.

Drive Responsibly
In 2024, distracted driving killed 3,208 people. April, which is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, is a good time to regroup and take responsibility for the choices we make when we’re on the road. Follow these safety tips for a safe ride:

Need to send a text? Pull over and park your car in a safe location.
Designate your passenger as your “designated texter” to respond to calls or messages.
Do not scroll through apps while driving. Struggling not to text and drive? Put the cell phone in the trunk, glove box, or back seat of the vehicle until you arrive at your destination.

The Consequences
During a portion of Distracted Driving Awareness Month, from April 9 through 13, you may see increased law enforcement on the roadways as part of the national paid media campaign Put the Phone Away or Pay. This campaign reminds drivers of the deadly dangers and the legal consequences – including fines – of texting behind the wheel.

Take Action
Remind your friends and family: If you’re in the driver’s seat, it’s the only thing you should be doing. No distractions.
If your driver is texting or otherwise distracted, tell them to stop and focus on the road.
Ask your friends to join you in pledging not to drive distracted. You could save a life. Share your pledge on social media to spread the word.

Join the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's safety initiative to educate the public about the importance of sober driving.
• Drunk driving is illegal and deadly.
• Nationally, it is illegal to drive with a BA of .08 of g/dL or higher, except in Utah, where the legal limit is .05 g/dL.
• Even a small amount of alcohol can affect driving ability.
• During the 2022 St. Patrick’s Day holiday, 74 people died in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes.
• Drunk male drivers were involved in fatal crashes at a higher rate (29%) during the 2022 St. Patrick’s Day holiday compared to female drivers. (14%)
• Young drivers ages 21-34 accounted for the highest percentage (34%) of alcohol-impaired drivers involved in fatal traffic crashes during the 2022 St. Patrick’s Day holiday.

Plan Ahead for a Safe celebration
• Always drive 100% sober. Even on alcoholic beverage could be one to many.
• Plan ahead! Before you have even one drink, designate a sober driver to get you home safely. If you wait until you’ve been drinking to make this decision, you might not make the best one.
• You have options to get home safely. Designate a sober driver or call a taxi or rideshare. Getting home safely is always worth it.
• If you are the designated driver. Take your job seriously and don’t drink.
• If you see a drunk driver on the road, contact local law enforcement.
• If you have a friend who is about to drink and drive, take the keys away and let a sober driver get your friend home safely
