Village of Richfield

Village of Richfield "For a Country Way of Life" OUR PHILOSOPHY:
We effectively plan and manage Village growth to successfully blend our rural heritage with our modern way of life.

We protect our diverse natural resources and environment. We treasure our small-town feel while investing in thoughtful business development that enhances the vitality of our community. We actively preserve our open space, our dark evening skies, and beautiful parklands. We responsibly monitor, carefully develop, and efficiently use our precious water resources. OUR GOVERNMENT:
We value an accessi

ble and efficient government that provides outstanding services to the community financed by the right balance of residential, commercial and agricultural property. We value civic engagement and community involvement in Village planning and decision making. We proactively anticipate the needs of the community and work hard to ensure that we have clean and walkable neighborhoods, safe streets, well-maintained roads, and inviting community buildings. We have a thoughtful and responsible approach to taxation that minimizes the financial burden of living here while supporting the essential government services and programs that sustain the health, safety, and beauty of our Village. OUR COMMUNITY:
We welcome new residents and honor our long-time residents' way of life and traditions. We have places to meet and build community and share local traditions and events that celebrate our history and our promosing future. Our parks and trails provide extensive recreational opportunities for those who live here- and for those who are just visiting. A Country Way of Life.....worth preserving!

Road construction update:

Here are a few pictures from today’s road construction on Pine Meadow Court. This process is called “undercutting”.

After the road is pulverized (ground up into tiny bits), a weighted tanker truck with 3,000 gallons of water in it drives over the surface of the pulverized road.

Areas with a “weak” or “insufficient base” will deflect under your feet as you walk behind the truck. If that happens, that means the road base is trash and needs to be ripped out and replaced.

On the surface, areas of road that have an “alligator-skin-like” appearance are a strong indicator of a base failure. Sometimes it’s a small stretch of road. Others, a whole lane width. In this instance, both travel lanes in their entirety have to be excavated and removed.

The brown striations you see are the various layers of clay underneath the roadway.

As the roads surface starts to deteriorate (in this case heavy tree cover which obstructs the sun and keeps the road shaded and water sitting on it longer than desired is a main culprit, I would suspect), water is able to seep into the road. But unlike a lot of areas in our community that have sand and gravel soils that are great for septic systems and recharging the aquifer, the clay is impermeable and ends of destroying the road over time during the freezing and thawing cycle.
It is replaced with stone.

New subdivision roads have 12” of limestone base and 6” of asphalt. Our new standard for road construction is not the same as it was decades ago where we may have only installed 4” of asphalt and maybe half that in base (6”).

Just like you wouldn’t build a house without a sturdy foundation, the same is true for roads, too!

Road Construction Update:

THURS: If you live on E. Friess Lake Road, there will be a period of 2 hours starting at approximately 9AM that due to the width of the road, cars will not be able to exit their homes as the paver is laying asphalt. The paving crew is starting on the west side of the road and laying asphalt towards Hubertus Road.

WED: Elmwood Road from St. Augustine to Plat Road will also be paved starting this morning.

🚨 🚨 🚨

Road construction season has started in the Village as of yesterday. The road construction projects we have slated for this year are expected to be completed by the end of this month.

While roads will always be accessible to homeowners, there may be delays with the staging of construction equipment or workers within the construction zone.

Please exercise caution when driving through our active construction zones for your own safety and the safety of the workers in the field.

It's the final week to submit designs for the Washington County “I Voted” Sticker Contest!
This is a fun opportunity for students to leave their mark on our community and have their artwork seen by voters across the county.
➡️We’re especially looking for additional submissions from our K5–2 and high school (9–12) students.

Winning designs will be used during the November 3, 2026 General Election and throughout the following year. Please help us spread the word with your students, families, and art departments before the May 31st deadline.

ℹ️Submit designs and find contest details here: www.washcowisco.gov/ivotedsticker
