Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad

Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad To Enhance Recruitment.. Membership shall be open to all individuals 18 years and older, regardless of race, creed, color, s*x, or religion

The Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad began operating on July 1, 1968, with one (1) ambulance and another one on order and six (6) qualified members who had received the necessary training from the American Red Cross. There were seventy-eight (78) applications also on hand on July 18th and thirty-two (32) people in training. All of the past and current residents of Mathews County owe this dedicated g

roup of people a heart-felt thank-you for creating the way for our modern day squad. We have since grown to five (5) state-of-the-art Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulances, a county-wide E-911 system, advanced cardiac monitoring and many other life-saving devices. The type of emergency medical service that we provide includes both basic life support (BLS) and advanced life support (ALS). BLS providers are the foundation of the squad, providing initial assessment and treatment of both minor and major injuries and illnesses, providing CPR, immobilization of fractures, control of bleeding and medication administration to treat breathing difficulty, diabetic emergencies and chest pain. ALS providers build upon the BLS treatments, providing intravenous access, cardiac monitoring and medication administration. EVOCs are the transportation arm of the squad, having been educated in defensive driving skills and in assistance with direct patient care. Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad

Yearly, Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad answers over 1,000 calls for medical emergencies and assistance. Typical calls that we answer include motor vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, and trauma calls. We are able to handle this call volume thanks to our dedicated volunteer members. We have more than thirty-five (35) active emergency medical technicians (EMT), Enhanced, Intermediate and Paramedics. Our EMTs are required to be certified by State of Virginia, and some EMTs are Nationally Registered. These members have volunteered to help others and volunteer countless hours of their time to maintain required certifications.

Pictured here are two of our Paramedics Billy Garrett and our newest member David Harris. In this picture they are going over a ventilator. This is used for major breathing difficulty calls. This helps our patients with a multitude of functions to support your breathing. This machine gives us the same capabilities as the hospitals.

We are often lulled into thinking our Rescue Squad is just a "small town rescue squad". Our organization prides itself on having the best and most advanced equipment/capabilities. We truly practice "big city medicine" in our small town. We are the only rural Rescue Squad in our area that carries this equipment and has the ability to practice Rapid Sequence Induction (RSI). RSI is the ability to take over breathing for our patients with extreme breathing difficulties. This is accomplished with the combined use of medication, intubation (breathing tube), and the ventilator (pictured).

We all hope you have a wonderful and safe day in our wonderful county!

Here is a picture of the bay floor tonight at the building. This is just the tip of the iceberg looking over all citizens tonight. It's a beautiful thing when all agencies come together for the greater good.

Good Evening,

We at the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad (MVRS) would like to take a moment to discuss CORVID-19 SARS2 (Coronavirus) and how it will affect our daily operations. This is a very serious matter that we here are continuously monitoring. Although we don't have any confirmed cases present here in the county, it doesn't mean we shouldn't be prepared. MVRS has had some policy changes due to the seriousness of this disease to protect you, your loved ones, and our providers.

1) We have asked the Mathews County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) Dispatchers to ask the caller if they have Flu-like symptoms (fever, runny or stuffy nose, cough, sore throat, muscle or body aches, headache, or fatigue). If you have any of these symptoms do not be embarrassed, please share that information with the MCSO Dispatchers and the responding crews. This will help us limit the exposure to the virus and continue to allow our providers to respond to calls.

2) If at any time during the incident or prior to our arrival we are notified of Flu-like symptoms we will put on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). This PPE will include a gown, eye protection, gloves, and an N95 mask on the providers. There will also be a surgical mask or oxygen mask placed on the patient. We understand that this visually looks to be "overkill" but this is what the Centers for Disease Control and Protection (CDC) recommends for us to follow.

3) Family members will no longer be allowed to travel in the ambulance unless it is a Pediatric patient. Then and only then will there be allowed one Parent/Guardian/Caretaker to ride, regardless of the nature of the call. This will also limit the number exposed and the potential exposure of our providers to this disease.

We are truly sorry if this upsets anyone or is an inconvenience. We are just trying to follow the recommendations of the CDC and use our best judgment to protect everyone involved. We as always are here for you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We have a precious resource in our providers that we have a limited supply of and as stated above we're trying to do everything we can to protect everyone involved.

Thank you for your continued support during these trying times. It is an absolute honor to serve our little slice of heaven our Mathews County. Attached below is a link to the CDC at its recommendations for your home.

If you have roughly 3 minutes and 1 second please take a look at this. This truly is the biggest difference maker for out of hospital cardiac arrest. With each compression on the patients chest you're increasing the chance of survival until trained professionals can take over. We truly thank all of you for your support and help in all situations. Stay safe out there, and remember we still make house calls! 😉😉
