RSN: Trump Wrong as Always About the Virus

Ronnie Dugger, who inspired the founding of our group nearly 25 years ago, has written this article about policy failures on COVID-19 and what a new administration must do to protect health across the world. https://readersupportednews.org/opinion2/277-75/65900-rsn-trump-wrong-as-always-about-the-virus

Dugger writes: For our American democracy we the people, the citizens of the United States, should after almost four years well know what Donald Trump has said and done as our president.

The impacts from contaminated drinking water are psychological as well as physical. Read the original post and the series.

Water is life. What happens when water isn’t cared for and carries carcinogens to a community for generations?

This article in the Maine Beacon - the second installment in a two-part series on the Passamaquoddy Water District (PWD) crisis - discusses the lasting physical, psychological and emotional impacts of water quality issues on the Passamaquoddy community at Sipayik (Pleasant Point). The community and its members have not had reliable access to clean water for decades. Historical abuse and distrust from the government and state-imposed sovereignty restrictions have limited the measures tribes can take to improve their infrastructure, limiting the possibilities for a solution.

Wabanaki Public Health has coordinated the donation and delivery of bottled water to the community throughout the summer, but a long-term solution for water quality as well as public health largely depends on self-determination and the willingness of the state to work alongside tribal nations.

Read more about the history of the PWD water supply, the discovery and effects of the contaminants in the Passamaquoddy water supply, and the work being done short- and long-term to change the future of our community’s water below:

"Threatening a trade dispute is a common scare tactic to discourage regulation. Still, the ink was barely dry on the USMCA before the plastics lobby seized on it to raise doubts about Canada’s plastic pollution plan." https://thehill.com/opinion/energy-environment/521318-us-chemical-industry-overreaches-by-invoking-usmca-to-reverse

All countries need the regulatory freedom to take the plastics crisis seriously. Expansive new language in the USMCA chips away at that freedom.

Trade activists need to organize to make sure the next president follows through on promises to reform and expand "Buy American" procurement regulations. This podcast highlights some of the good things those regulations have done for the environment and economy, and how multinationals have worked to weaken them.

Speak up today for "defense" appropriation cuts

This is the week to call and demand your Representative and Senators support amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act. These amendments would trim more than $70 billion, money that can be redirected to meet human needs, critical at all times but even more so during a pandemic.

Please give your Senators and Representative a call in support of amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act that cut 10% from the military budget--a start to redirect our money from war to human need.

Support/Vote in Favor of Sen. Sanders amendment to reduce the FY21 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA21) by 10%
Congress and the US Senate are working now on the Fiscal Year 2021 National Defense Authorization Act representing a one-year budget . There has been a call to defund of police; we need to add a call to defund the military.

This year’s Defense budget of $740.5 billion is larger than the defense budgets of the world’s next 10 largest. It is $100 billion more than the defense budget of 3 years ago when Mr. Trump became President.

When is enough? We say it is now.

Senator Bernie Sanders has introduced an amendment to the HDAA21 to reduce the budget by 10% ($74.5 billion).

Call on your Senators to vote Yes on this amendment.

This amendment will be introduced into the US House as well. You US Representative should also support and vote Yes on Sen. Sanders amendment when it comes to Congress.

Enough is enough.

Let’s take care of the needs of the American people instead of the bloated Pentagon war machine budget.

The Bank of North Dakota, a public bank owned by the state and committed to working for the public good, has done an outstanding job getting Paycheck Protection Program loans to small businesses, as Alliance co-chair David Delk writes in this letter to the editor, published in Sunday's Oregonian. Time to look at the benefits of a public bank for Oregon and Portland--or your state or city. Multi-national corporations have used and continue to threaten to use the Investor-State-Dispute Settlement provisions of international "Free" trade agreements to extract money from "Less-developed nations" because those nations act to ensure the welfare of their citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Maine Fair Trade Campaign

Maine Fair Trade Campaign's virtual town hall on COVID-19 and trade policy featured Dana Gill of Doctors Without Borders on how trade-related medicine monopolies raise healthcare costs and stifle medical innovation, Bryn Gay of Treatment Action Group on myths about drug development, Arthur Stamoulis of Citizens Trade Campaign on trade policy and outsourcing of medical equipment & PPE manufacturing, Elaine Bernard formerly of Harvard’s Labor and Worklife Program on the COVID-19 pandemic and the climate crisis, and Sharon Treat of the Institute on Agriculture and Trade Policy on preventing a corporate-driven “shock doctrine” moment in upcoming trade deals. Worth watching!

Free trade agreements that prioritize private profits over healthy communities have made the world far less resilient in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic’s dual public health and economic crises.

Incredibly, corporate lobby groups are doubling-down on calls for new trade deals that could harm us even further. We need your help breaking into the media narrative about COVID-19 to explain to our neighbors why corporate-driven, profit-first trade agreements are no longer acceptable.

In this virtual town hall on COVID-19 and trade policy, hear from:

* Dana Gill of Doctors Without Borders on how trade-related medicine monopolies raise healthcare costs and stifle medical innovation

* Bryn Gay of Treatment Action Group on myths about drug development and pharmaceutical ingredient supply chain consolidation

* Arthur Stamoulis of Citizens Trade Campaign on how bad trade policies have outsourced America’s medical equipment & PPE manufacturing capacity

* Elaine Bernard formerly of Harvard’s Labor and Worklife Program on ways the COVID-19 pandemic provides a window into the climate crisis and climate solutions

* Sharon Treat of the Institute on Agriculture and Trade Policy on preventing a corporate-driven “shock doctrine” moment in upcoming trade deals
