In April of 1925, it was decided to erect a monument at the Eden Cemetery, by Hudson, South Dakota, to remember the Unknown Dead.
The same year the Decoration Day Service was held by the newly erected monument.
The G.A.R. Monument and service was attended by five veterans of the Civil War. David Thorpe, H.D. Fitch, Joseph Warner, Peterson Pierce, and Henry Hermanson. Also present were Spanish and World War veterans.

Just a reminder that we are raising funds for the new Library/Historical Room building.

There may be some confusion for some people who may think the building is only for the library. That is not the case. It is a combination library/Historical Room building. The library will be located in the front of the building and the H Room behind the library.

So, when you send in your donations please designate it for the "Library Building Fund". Even though the account is called the Library Building Fund it will support both the library and H Room.

Donations can be sent to:

Hudson Premier Bank
Library Building Fund
PO Box 447
Hudson, SD 57034

or

Hudson City Office
Library Building Fund
PO Box 462
Hudson, SD 57034

As always anything you are able to donate is greatly appreciated. We look forward to getting into our new home.

HISTORY OF THE START OF THE HISTORICAL ROOM

This is a highlight of the Hudson Library Historical Association start and the Historical Room.
The Historical Room was originally started after the fire that took the Hudson School in 2007. In 2008, after the library had been moved into the building next to the post office, the top floor had a large number of old newspapers on the upper floor. With the thought of using the top floor for housing the many class pictures from the Hudson School, as well as other items, we had to go through a number of old newspapers that were stored there. The newspaper duplicates were discarded, and the rest were stored.
In the beginning the majority of the items on display were from the school. We had class pictures, cheerleading outfits, football jerseys and much more. Also, we had items that were saved from the school, like the trophy case and trophies, and many music plaques. As time went on, we added many more items such as old annuals, and many items from the Hudson area.
We were officially started in 2009. At that time, we asked for volunteers to join us in preserving the Hudson History. Through the years we have had only a handful of volunteers. We have always had a lot of support when we had a fundraiser for something needed in the Historical Room, but with our small group we were able to accomplish a lot.
One of our first projects was replacing the windows in the front of the Historical Room and adding covering. We needed to protect the many pictures that were hung on the walls. We started with curtains and later added blinds.
Through the years we have raised money to add a furnace and air conditioner to the top floor, which was separate from the library below. We raised money for track lights, as lighting wasn’t the best, helped with roof repair, and added a sign to the outside of the building to show where we were located. We purchased additional display cases, as well as receiving some donations of display cases.
But we didn’t just do projects for the Historical Room. We broadened our projects. We were able to restore the old school bell and add a memorial located by the Hudson Community Center. We also were able to restore the Boy Scout Cabin, and it is now listed as the Hudson Historical Boy Scout Cabin. We also were able to get signs posted on the west, east, and north sides of Hudson, as well as in front of the Boy Scout Cabin, showing the Historical designation. The sign also shows that the first paid woman baseball umpire, Amanda Clement, came from Hudson.
We were able to send off annuals from 1950 to 1985 and have them digitally put on a DVD. We were also instrumental in getting the microfilm reader and film reels for the library.
Our latest big project was raising money for the chair lifts to make it easier for people to get to the upper floor of the library. Before we could barely use them, we were hit with the storm that damaged the building. They needed to be removed. We were happy to donate them to the Hudson Legion for the Memorial Building.
That brings us to the present. We are now helping to raise money for the new library/Historical Room building, which will be built in the same area as the old library building and to the empty lot to the east. This will be a building that is one level, which will make it easier for everyone to use the Historical Room. We look forward to the time we will be open to the public again.
We currently have a committee that is looking at plans and working on designing the building. The committee is taking into account where it is located and how it fits into the buildings surrounding us.
If you are able, we would definitely appreciate anything you can donate. Donations can be given or sent to the Hudson Premier Bank or to the Hudson city office. The bank address is PO Box 447 Hudson, SD 57034 and the city office is PO Box 462 Hudson, SD 57034.

When we think of the Book of Gold, we think of the large display of names of service members. But there was also an actual book called the Book of Gold. The book had the service record of men and women from the Hudson and Fairview communities of WWI and WWII veterans. The book was sponsored by the American Legion Post 128 of Hudson and assisted by the Hudson and Fairview business men.

This article was in the 1903 Hudsonite. Ollie Parkin's band uniform was displayed in the Historical Room. We look forward to displaying it again once the new building is built. The St. James hotel was once on the main street of Hudson. It is to the right of the city picture.

O.H. Parkin

“Next door to the post office is the St. James Hotel, with O.H. Parkin as manager. The St. James hotel is a hostelry well known for its efficient service, the cleanliness of the rooms and the excellency of its cuisine.
Over twenty years ago Mrs. Amanda Parkin and her son Ollie opened a boarding house in the old hotel that formerly stood where part of Schoeneman Bros. lumber yards now stands. They kept such a clean house, gave such good meals and attended to the wants of their patrons so well that the old hotel became too small and Mrs. Parkin purchased the big roller-skating rink and made a hotel out of it calling it the St. James Hotel.
During all these years they have made yearly improvements in the hotel building and have just newly re-arranged its rooms and now have one of the finest, most convenient hotels in the state. Mr. Parkin has just about completed putting in a new furnace and every room in the house will be warm and comfortable in the coldest weather.
Traveling men say that the St. James Hotel is the finest place in the state to stop in and say that they get the best meals and have the neatest rooms right here in good old Hudson and that’s why they all like to stop here. The cooking of this hotel cannot be beaten. We know whereof we speak for we boarded there for months some years ago.
O.H. Parkin besides being a first-rate hotel man is also a fine musician and plays a cornet like an Italian virtuoso. Ollie loves music and can play several musical instruments well but his strong hold is a Bb cornet. He can chase more music out of that instrument than we could out of three steam calliopes and he keeps improving himself and perfecting himself in music. He is a member of the Hudson Orchestra and is a solid, substantial citizen. He has been town clerk and has held high offices in the lodges.”

Thanks everyone for the great turnout at the library/Historical Room fundraiser. Let's keep it going. Donations can be sent to the Hudson Premier Bank. The faster we raise the money, the faster the building can begin.
A big thank you to anyone who helped in anyway to make this happen.
We are looking forward to a new home.
