Q: How does Homeownership work?

A: Families in need of decent, affordable housing apply for homeownership with their local Habitat for Humanity. Habitat’s family selection committee selects homeowners based on three criteria:
The applicant’s level of need, Their willingness to partner with Habitat, Their ability to repay a mortgage through an affordable payment plan. Habitat’s homebuyers invest hundreds of hours of their own lab

or, called sweat equity, working alongside volunteers and other Habitat homeowners, in addition to paying an affordable mortgage and receiving financial education. Habitat for Humanity follows a nondiscriminatory policy of family selection. Neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing Habitat’s homeowners. OPEN NOW: applications for our July Critical Home Repair Program session! 🛠️

June is National Homeownership Month, and we're kicking off applications! Are you a homeowner in need of smaller repairs or modifications to stay in your home safely, or to make your home accessible? Maybe you need trip hazards addressed near your main entryway, or grab bars installed in your bathroom? Perhaps you need gaps filled around your windows, or maybe you have a leaky faucet that needs fixing? If you make 40-80% of Area Median Income, your project may be eligible for our Critical Home Repair Program! We are now accepting applications for our first repair session, which will take place the last week of July. Applications will be taken through June 30.

You can find the application, and more information about the program including the menu of eligible repair options and a chart showing Area Median income by household size, at https://scvhabitat.org/critical-home-repair 🏠

Last Wednesday, our Board of Directors joined us on site in Ellsworth for our annual Board Build day! It's a tradition we love and look forward to as it's a great day of team building and board members/staff getting to know each other outside of a meeting! Ellsworth Village President Becky Beissel also stopped by to see our progress and talk about the need for affordable housing in Ellsworth. A lot was accomplished! Pavers were set, deck stairs were worked on, and landscaping was continued. These houses are really starting to look like homes!

We're close to completion, but there's still work to be done - sign up to volunteer at scvhabitat.volunteerhub.com!

Coming July 2026: St. Croix Valley Habitat for Humanity's Critical Home Repair Program! 🥳🏠🔨

We're proud to announce our new Critical Home Repair Program, designed to help local homeowners (who fit within our income guidelines) with essential repairs and modifications that improve safety, accessibility, and quality of life. From fixing unsafe conditions to helping seniors age in place, the program is designed to keep families in the homes and neighborhoods they love - because everyone deserves a safe, stable place to call home.

Our Critical Home Repair Program will be offered at the end of every other month, starting this July, and will focus on projects that we can complete within a 1-3 day timeframe. Applicants may choose from a "menu" of repair/modification options, which include projects like installing grab bars, upgrading lighting fixtures for better visibility, addressing exterior entryway trip hazards, and more. We will open applications for each repair session at the beginning of the preceding month. Our application for the July repair session is available starting June 1! Go to scvhabitat.org/critical-repair-program for more information and the full menu of eligible projects!

With special thanks to the Andersen Corporate Foundation, we look forward to helping more people love the places that make their lives better. 🧡
