Another successful year with the 9th Annual Sheriff’s Office Shop with a Cop – Return to School. A group of lucky children stopped by for food, activities, and a shopping spree with area law enforcement. Shout out to Hudson PD, Somerset PD, Roberts PD, Hammond PD, Glenwood City PD, Wisconsin State Patrol, The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, SCC Health/Human Services, and SCC Justice Support Services for their assistance year after year!

Most importantly, we express our utmost gratitude to the businesses and citizens in our community. This annual event relies entirely on private donations and support. Special thanks to Grace Place Salvation Army, Walmart New Richmond, and Youth Action Hudson. Their hard work allows deputies and officers to focus their energy on connecting with the families.

It is with heavy heart and sadness that we announce the passing of retired St. Croix County Sheriff John Shilts Sr. John suffered a medical emergency in Deer Park, WI on July 14. He was flown to the University of Minnesota. He died shortly after his arrival at the hospital.

Sheriff Shilts spent a lifetime in law enforcement, starting with the Somerset and New Richmond Police Departments, and moving on to the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office in 1987. Over the next three decades with St. Croix County, he served in a variety of roles, including the drug task force, Emergency Response Unit, sergeant, captain, and chief deputy. John was elected sheriff in 2011 and was re-elected to a second term. On July 14, 2017, John retired after serving the citizens of St. Croix County for a combined 38 years.

John served with pride, integrity and a genuine commitment to the safety and well-being of others. His leadership, professionalism and larger than life presence helped shape the Sheriff’s Office and the people within it. His friendship, and his many contributions will not be forgotten.

Our hearts go out to his family during this incredibly difficult time. We recognize that his greatest legacy is not only his years of public service, but also the love and memories he leaves behind with those closest to him. We honor John’s life with gratitude for his years of service, respect for his character, and appreciation for the sacrifices he and his family made on behalf of the community. He will be missed, remembered, and forever regarded as a huge part of our St. Croix County family.
