Today, the Waterloo Police Department hosted the annual Black Hawk County Peace Officers’ Memorial Service at Veterans Memorial Hall in downtown Waterloo. Held each year during National Police Week, this ceremony honors and remembers the law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

During the service, tribute was paid to 14 fallen officers from agencies across Black Hawk County. Their dedication, courage, and commitment to protecting their communities will never be forgotten.

The memorial service was attended by the families of our fallen heroes, community members, city leaders, active law enforcement officers, and retired officers. Their presence served as a powerful reminder of the respect, gratitude, and support our community holds for those who serve and protect.

“A great day to buckle down on safety! SRO Husidic and Trooper Arbegast with Iowa State Patrol spent the day with Hudson Community School students with the seat belt convincer. Students got the opportunity to experience a simulated 10 mph collision while learning the importance of seatbelts.
After a ride like that, students are officially tied up in good habits!”

We want to thank our friends at Iowa State Patrol and the Hudson Community Schools for prioritizing safety to our youth.

Today we remember Sergeant Jim Smith, who gave the ultimate sacrifice five years ago today. Sergeant Smith was a friend to many in the Law Enforcement Community. We continue to keep Sergeant Smith's family, as well as his Iowa State Patrol colleagues, in our thoughts each day.

** In Memoriam**

On April 9, 2021, Sergeant Jim Smith #462 was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a subject who had assaulted and disarmed another law enforcement officer during a traffic stop near Grundy Center.

The subject initially fled as officers attempted to stop him, but the subject stopped and confronted law enforcement and antagonized them to shoot him. The man then assaulted one of the officers and disarmed him after placing the officer in a chokehold. The subject was able to get back into his car and fled to his home.

Responding officers established a perimeter around the home and established an arrest team. When the arrest team entered the home, the man opened fire with a shotgun, striking Sergeant Smith. Other members of the team were able to remove Sergeant Smith from the home. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The subject shot at an Iowa State Patrol tactical team at about 11:50 pm. The man was wounded by return fire, taken into custody, and charged with murder.

Sergeant Smith had served with the Iowa State Patrol for 27 years.
