As the new school year approaches, we encourage all community members to take a moment to read Dr. Voss’s latest back-to-school update. School may be out for the summer, but SRO Officer Husidic is still making a positive impact! 📚☀️

This week, Officer Husidic spent time connecting with the youth in our community at the Hudson Public Library. Building relationships outside of the classroom is just as important as those made during the school year, and we’re proud to see those connections continue throughout the summer.

Today, I had the opportunity to travel to Atlantic, Iowa, for the Iowa Police Chiefs Association Small Agency Committee Quarterly Luncheon. One of the highlights of the trip was reconnecting with former Hudson Police Sgt. Wiersma.

Before the meeting, Officer Wiersma and I met for breakfast. He then gave me a tour of the Atlantic Police Department and showed me around the beautiful City of Atlantic while we rode together on patrol.

It was great catching up and seeing how well he’s doing. Officer Wiersma is certainly missed by the Hudson Police Department, but I bet even more so by the Hudson community, where he made a lasting impact through his service.

🎆 FIREWORKS REMINDER – PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU LIGHT THE FUSE! 🎆

The Hudson Police Department would like to remind everyone to celebrate safely, responsibly, and respectfully this Independence Day.

While fireworks are a great way to celebrate, please remember that not everyone enjoys the late-night booms. Young children, pets, neighbors who have to work early, and many of our military veterans living with PTSD can all be affected by excessive or unlawful fireworks use.

⏰ Consumer Fireworks Discharge Hours

July 3: 9:00 AM – 10:00 PM
July 4 – July 6: 9:00 AM – 11:00 PM
July 7 – July 8: 9:00 AM – 10:00 PM

Outside of these hours, the celebration ends—and it’s time to be a good neighbor.

Hudson City Ordinance 41.14 – Fireworks

Please remember:

✅ Anyone under 18 must be supervised by a parent or guardian when discharging consumer fireworks.

✅ Fireworks may only be discharged on property you own or where you have the property owner’s permission.

✅ Fireworks may not be discharged by anyone who is intoxicated or under the influence of drugs.

✅ Anyone using fireworks assumes full responsibility for their actions and any resulting injuries, fires, or property damage. Fireworks must never be discharged in a reckless or unsafe manner.

Let’s work together to make this a fun and safe holiday for everyone.

As the City continues moving forward and addressing outstanding issues within our community, I want to bring to your attention a matter that was recently brought to my knowledge regarding our Golf Cart Ordinance and Iowa Code §321.247B.

Under Iowa law, golf carts operated on city streets must be equipped with a slow-moving vehicle emblem and a bicycle safety flag. In addition, golf carts may only be operated on public streets from SUNRISE to SUNSET. This restriction applies even if the golf cart is equipped with headlamps, brake lights, turn signals, or other aftermarket safety equipment.

Because state law establishes this daytime-only requirement, local municipal ordinances must comply with state-level restrictions. Therefore, the City CANNOT authorize or permit golf cart operation outside of the sunrise-to-sunset timeframe.

What is considered sunset?

Sunset is defined as the exact time when the upper edge of the sun's disk disappears completely below the horizon.

Any person operating a golf cart in violation of Iowa Code §321.247B commits a Simple Misdemeanor, punishable by a scheduled fine of $210.25.

The City is currently moving forward with revisions to the existing golf cart ordinance to ensure it aligns with Iowa law.

At this time, the Hudson Police Department will not immediately begin enforcement through citations. Instead, officers will focus on education and voluntary compliance. For the next THIRTY (30) days, officers will issue warnings to individuals found operating golf carts outside the legal hours of operation.

We appreciate the community's understanding and cooperation as we work to ensure our local ordinances remain consistent with state law and that our roadways remain safe for everyone.

Today, the Waterloo Police Department hosted the annual Black Hawk County Peace Officers’ Memorial Service at Veterans Memorial Hall in downtown Waterloo. Held each year during National Police Week, this ceremony honors and remembers the law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

During the service, tribute was paid to 14 fallen officers from agencies across Black Hawk County. Their dedication, courage, and commitment to protecting their communities will never be forgotten.

The memorial service was attended by the families of our fallen heroes, community members, city leaders, active law enforcement officers, and retired officers. Their presence served as a powerful reminder of the respect, gratitude, and support our community holds for those who serve and protect.

May 4th - 8th, Officer Sohm and K-9 Partner Kiro attended the DLE Certifications K-9 Seminar held at various locations in and around Independence, Iowa. The seminar emphasized training, problem solving, scenario-based exercises, and certification in Patrol, Narcotics, and Tracking. Over 75 K-9 teams and trainers participated, representing the United States, Great Britain, and Canada. Great job, Officer Sohm and Kiro!
