Today is Dinosaur Day and so we look back to Hudson’s relatively recent history with dinosaurs: The Jonas Studio work for the 1964 World’s Fair! A parade of dinosaur models, created for the Dinoland exhibit in the World’s Fair, went from 7th Street Park down Warren Street to the waterfront where they were loaded on boats headed for Queens, the site of the World’s Fair.

We are looking for any photographs, memorabilia and/or memories from local folks who remember this event in the annals of Hudson history for an upcoming exhibit. Email [email protected] with any information.

Thursday, June 4, 6-7:30pm via Zoom, the library and the Leisler Institute presents Wartime Refugee Crisis in the Hudson Valley, 1754-1763 by Tom Arne Midtrød. As this preamble to a proclamation by Governor Sir Charles Hardy of New York illustrates Mahican and Munsee-speaking populations in the Hudson Valley were under pressure to relocate due to the French and Indian War and this led to a refugee crisis.

This Memorial Day we honor all who gave their lives serving their country including Colonel David S. Cowles, who led the 128th Regiment of Columbia and Dutchess counties and was killed during the 28-day siege of Port Hudson, Louisiana. It is said he died saying, “tell my brother that I died with my face to the foe.” Words to that effect are on his tombstone in the Cedar Park Cemetery.

This image of a Neefus photo featured in the Register-Star in the 1970s is of the last house, and one of Hudson's oldest, demolished on Chapel Street in Hudson. Neither the house nor the street exist anymore. Walter First, grandson of the owners, did the demolition. The History Room contains many photographs, maps and documents pertaining to urban renewal.

Thursday, June 4, 6-7:30pm via Zoom Tom Arne Midtrød, Ph.D. will discuss how the outbreak of the Seven Years' War affected Mahican and Munsee-speaking populations in the Hudson Valley. Native groups were forcibly removed and relocated to new areas both inside and outside of the Valley, creating a refugee crisis. This image is of Old Fort Johnson, which was a central location during the refugee crisis. Tuesday we posted about one of our newest oral histories. Today we feature an oral history from the 1980s, part of the Black Legacy Association of Columbia County (BLACC) collection.

Ms. Parker, a Hudson resident, discusses life in Hudson from the early 1900s including her memories of coal and ice deliveries, the vegetable man who came on his horse drawn cart on the Hudson-Athens ferry, and homemade liniments. All from the era when the Hudson River froze over and people walked across it to the other side!

The video is available to view on the BLACC website: https://blacc.hudsonarealibrary.org/oral-histories/marie-parker
