💙🏫🚒 Celebrating a Legacy, Honoring a Community 🚒🏫💙

Today, members of St. Joseph Fire & Rescue had the privilege of taking part in the Celebration of Houlton’s Legacy—a day filled with memories, stories, laughter, and more than a few tears.

For generations, Houlton Elementary School has been far more than just a building. Since opening its doors to students in 1970, it has been a place where lifelong friendships were formed, lessons were learned, traditions were created, and countless children took their first steps toward the future.

Today brought together students, teachers, staff, families, and alumni—past and present—to celebrate the incredible impact this school has had on our community. As we walked the halls and listened to stories spanning decades, it became clear that Houlton Elementary’s legacy isn’t found in bricks and mortar, but in the people whose lives it helped shape.

Our department has been honored to be a small part of that story. We have participated in school events, safety programs, Kite Days, and community activities over the years. Many of our members once walked these halls as students, and later watched their own children do the same.

While Houlton Elementary’s final day with students will be June 2, 2026, the memories created here will live on for generations. Its closing leaves a hole in the heart of our community, but its legacy will remain woven into the fabric of St. Joseph Township forever.

Some buildings are just buildings. Houlton Elementary was never one of them.

Thank you for 56 years of memories, friendships, lessons, and community.

To every student, teacher, staff member, volunteer, and family who helped make Houlton Elementary what it was—thank you.

Once a Houlton Hawk, always a Houlton Hawk. ❤️

🚒🐈 KITTY RESCUE: SUCCESSFUL 🐈🚒

You’ve heard the stories… you’ve seen it in cartoons… and now it has officially happened at St. Joe Fire & Rescue.

In the middle of the night, a local resident found themselves facing a true emergency: their cat had climbed high into a tree and decided it had absolutely zero interest in coming back down. After multiple attempts by the owners to coax the furry escape artist back to earth, the call went out…

Enter Chief Spates and Captain 3 Hartung. 💪🏻

With Chief holding the extension ladder steady and Captain 3 making the climb, the rescue mission was underway. Step by step, Captain 3 ascended into the treetop and officially completed a firefighter milestone:

🚨 His first cat-in-a-tree rescue. 🚨

We’re happy to report the mission ended with one safe kitty back on the ground and one Captain who can now officially check “storybook firefighter rescue” off his list.

Sometimes it’s structure fires. Sometimes it’s medical calls. And sometimes… it’s proving those old firefighter stereotypes really do happen. 😏

Great work to Chief Spates and Captain 3 for answering the call and helping a family (and one very thankful cat) sleep a little easier.

🇺🇸 This Memorial Day, members of St. Joseph Fire & Rescue were honored to represent our department and community in the Bayport Memorial Day Parade.

Today was about more than a parade. It was a day to pause, reflect, and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and our freedoms. Their courage and selflessness will never be forgotten.

🚒🚑💙 Many Places. One Heart for Service. 💙🚑🚒

This EMS Week, we want to recognize the members of St. Joseph Fire & Rescue who serve beyond our department walls.

Many of our members wear more than one patch — serving communities through EMS agencies, and fire departments-across the region. They dedicate countless hours to answering calls, helping strangers, and serving others… all while continuing to volunteer right here at home with St. Joe.

Service isn’t just something they do — it’s who they are.

To those balancing multiple roles, long shifts, late nights, missed holidays, and countless communities: thank you. Your dedication and sacrifice do not go unnoticed.

Different patches. Different communities. Same heart for service.

We are proud of you. Thankful for you. Always family. ❤️
