🛩️ 100 Years Ago Today: A Hudson native flew over the North Pole!
On May 12, 1926, Lincoln Ellsworth, along with Roald Amundsen and Umberto Nobile, completed the first flight over the North Pole in the airship Norge.
Born in 1880 and raised in Hudson, Ellsworth attended Western Reserve Academy before becoming one of the world's most celebrated explorers. His achievements include polar crossings and Antarctic expeditions covering 300,000 square miles of unexplored territory. The Ellsworth Mountains bear his name today.
Throughout his life, Ellsworth remained connected to Hudson, serving on the Board of Trustees at Western Reserve Academy from 1926 to 1951.
Fun fact: You can see a Woolly Mammoth Tusk, once owned by Ellsworth, on display in our Reference Area!
