Frederic Church’s sense of humor was a welcomed surprise for OLANA’s summer intern, Darien, who is studying Computer Science and joined The Olana Partnership and Olana State Historic Site as a summer intern thanks to a collaboration with Columbia-Greene Community College.

“I especially loved Church's notes on display, and his personal casual sketches that gave a glimpse into his personality. Prior to this experience I had never considered that an artist from the 1800s could possess such a modern sense of humor. Those discoveries about him were the highlights of this project for me- giving me a sense of connection through relatability I had not anticipated.”

Darien interacted with our visitors and collected surveys during our Third Thursday events.

During the period when Olana was nearly destroyed and saved, the groundbreaking National Preservation Act of 1966 was created. This created a national framework to protect historic sites such as Olana and included the Section 106 review, which has safeguarded Olana and its viewshed for decades. Section 106 is now under threat, and organizations across the U.S. are voicing their concerns.

Section 106 is a key safeguard that gives communities, Tribal governments, preservation officials, and the public a voice when federal projects threaten historic places. Proposed changes would reduce reviews, significantly weaken consultation and public participation, and narrow what counts as historic, putting sacred landscapes, rural historic districts, and other cultural resources at risk.

Among the newly digitized collection, you’ll find one of Frederic Church’s earliest canvas paintings, completed when he was 18 years old.

Frederic Church painted this oval work during the first half of 1845, while living and working under the direct tutelage of Thomas Cole. Take a closer look at this piece online and view many more at OLANA.org/collections.

Spotted at OLANA this week!

Rainy weather may make you want to stay inside, but the fungi thrive when the ground is wet. We think Frederic Church would have ventured out, stopping along Olana’s carriage road to sketch these mushrooms and capture their brilliant color.

Have you noticed the unique wooden benches dispersed throughout the OLANA landscape?

These benches were designed by Frederic Church and they sit in key locations in Olana’s artist-designed landscape. Make sure to pause, sit, and take in the view Frederic Church designed for us during your next visit.

The Olana Partnership offers the opportunity to dedicate one of these benches with an inscription of your choice. Visit OLANA.org/benches to learn more.

Starting today you can access over 200 digitized, high-resolution works by Frederic Church! This is the largest launch to date of public online collections for Olana State Historic Site and is an important part of the year-long Frederic Church 200 initiative led by The Olana Partnership to mark the 200th anniversary of Church’s birth.

The first phase of digitization was made possible by a multi-year grant from the Henry Luce Foundation and focused on art works by Church in the Olana collection. This includes hundreds of previously unseen or rarely published paintings, sketches, oil studies, and sketchbooks. The Olana State Historic Site online collections portal gives public access to explore important objects from the collection not on view at Olana.

To view the Olana Collection online and explore other online collections at New York State historic sites and state parks, visit OLANA.org/collections.
