Since 2014, Blendon Township has provided Library Services for its residents through a contract with the Howard Miller Public Library (Zeeland City) and Gary Byker Memorial Library (Hudsonville City). Blendon residents began paying a dedicated millage of .3 mills ($0.30 per $1000 of taxable value) per year for this service. Due to Headlee rollback, the current millage levy has been reduced to 0.2691 mill. The contract ends on December 31, 2026.
To continue services, a new library millage proposal at 0.3 mills will appear on the August 4, 2026, ballot. This rate meets the State Aid to Public Libraries Act requirement for a minimum 0.3 mills local support to maintain eligibility for cooperative library membership. Both Howard Miller Public Library and Gary Byker Memorial Library are members of the Lakeland Library Cooperative, which provides access to shared resources and services.
Blendon residents will have the opportunity to vote at the August 4, 2026, election on whether to continue contracted Library Services or not.
• If the library millage passes, a "YES" vote, Library Services with Howard Miller Public Library and Gary Byker Memorial Library will continue until December 31, 2038. That means access to print, digital resources, and special collections will continue. Access to other Lakeland member libraries will also remain.
• If the library millage fails, a "NO" vote, Library Services with Howard Miller Public Library and Gary Byker Memorial Library will end December 31, 2026. That means access to print, digital resources, and special collections will end. Access to other Lakeland member libraries will also end.
Please reach out to either library with any questions.
