Bowen to Present on the Lost Sand Creek Site Discovery in Hugo on Saturday, August 16
HUGO, CO - Mike Bowen, with The Lost Sand Creek, will be presenting at the Hugo Community Center, located at 514 2nd Ave., on Saturday, August 16 at 1 p.m. on the discovery of the Lost Sand Creek Site, the true site of Black Kettle’s village and running battle areas. Come early at 12:30 p.m. to see a photo slideshow of the Hugo cowboys with the Holt Cattle Company in 1903. They were surprised with a visit by President Roosevelt. Chuck Bowen owns the original 5x7 glass negatives.
Chuck and Sheri Bowen discovered the Lost Sand Creek Site on the Bowen family ranch in the late 90’s. They found over 4,000 village and battle artifacts, all starting about two miles up the creek from where the Sand Creek Battle Ground monument once sat at the National Park Service Sand Creek historic site. This archaeological discovery not only shows the real 1864 Sand Creek location, it reveals the truth about that event.
Mike Bowen co-authored We Found the Lost Sand Creek Site with his father, Chuck, which provides a detailed account of the discovery. There are over 100 photos of artifacts and maps in the book explaining artifacts found and where they were found.
Come learn how this amazing Sand Creek site discovery brings clarity to the 1864 event and why it matters 160 years later. There is a lot of information about Sand Creek in their book that had not been previously made available to the public.
See Sand Creek artifacts! The program is free to attend. Books will be available to purchase. Don’t forget to get your book signed!
