Cull Potatoes Available as Alternative Livestock Feed (San Luis Valley Area):

A surplus of cull potatoes in Colorado’s San Luis Valley may provide livestock producers with an affordable emergency feed option during ongoing drought and forage shortages. Strong potato yields and low market prices have left growers with excess potatoes that are often available at little or no cost beyond transportation.

Potatoes are a high-energy, low-protein feed source (about 9.5% protein) and work best when mixed with grass hay or low-quality alfalfa. Producers should avoid piling potatoes because their high moisture content can lead to rot and rodent issues. Instead, spreading potatoes across fields or pastures has proven to be an effective management method.

Smaller potatoes can create a choking hazard, so many producers crush or mash them before feeding. Once processed, potatoes can be mixed into feed rations to add moisture and improve intake of lower-quality forage.
