Over the past several weeks, our officers have seen a sharp rise in unsafe e‑scooter use throughout our community. We’ve had one serious accident, many near‑miss accidents, close calls with children riding into traffic, and daily complaints from concerned citizens.

E‑scooters may look harmless, but when they’re used without caution, they become a real danger — not only to the riders, but to drivers and pedestrians who never expect a scooter to dart out in front of them.

Kansas law requires e‑scooter riders to follow the same rules as bicycles: If you ride in the street, obey traffic signs, use lights at night, and operate safely. If you ride on the sidewalk, use extreme caution when entering the roadway and alleyways. These rules exist for one reason — to protect lives.

Parents, we're asking for your help. Please talk with your children about how to ride safely and responsibly. Many of the unsafe situations we’re seeing involve young riders who simply don’t understand the risks.

Our officers will be increasing patrols and addressing violations when we see dangerous behavior. This isn’t about punishment — it’s about preventing tragedy.

Hugoton is a strong, close‑knit community. When we work together, we keep each other safe. Thank you for your support, your cooperation, and your commitment to making our town a safer place for everyone.

BIKE RODEO SUCCESS

We had a fantastic turnout at the Bike Rodeo hosted by Hugoton Elementary School and the Hugoton Police Department. Thank you to all the kids and parents who came out to participate and support the event.

A special highlight was receiving a handwritten thank‑you card from one of the participants — it truly made our day.

We would like to thank Flying C Aviation for hosting a dinner for first responders to discuss response efforts related to an agricultural aircraft crash. They also took the opportunity to give attendees a tour and showcase their new office building. A delicious meal was prepared by Oklahoma Smoke, and the event saw a great turnout from first responders and other members of the community. We appreciate the opportunity to collaborate and strengthen our preparedness.

PROM NIGHT TRAFFIC NOTICE

Tonight is Prom Night in our community. For those attending the promenade, please plan to enter from South Main Street.

The Police Department will be blocking Main Street at 11th & Main for southbound traffic during the event. Please use alternate routes and watch for increased pedestrian activity in the area.

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and wish all students a safe and memorable evening.

We recently had a community member ask about creating a Safe Exchange Zone at the Police Department for things like online sales exchanges and child custody exchanges.

We hear the requests and ideas that come from our community, and when possible, we work to put them into action.

Our Safe Exchange Zone is located in the Police Department parking lot and is monitored by cameras 24/7. These spaces are available for anyone who wants a safer place to complete online purchase meetups or exchange custody of children.

Thank you to the citizen who brought this idea forward. We appreciate the input from our community and are always looking for ways to improve safety and service.

The Hugoton Police Department is proud to announce the newest member of our team: Officer Whiskers, our first-ever C-9 Unit.
After an extensive (and highly selective) recruitment process, Officer Whiskers stood out for exceptional skills in:
✔️ Suspicious activity detection (especially involving unattended snacks)
✔️ Advanced surveillance from high perches
✔️ Lightning-fast response to the sound of food wrappers
✔️ Morale boosting across the department
Officer Whiskers has already begun patrol and can be seen assisting officers around town, primarily wherever the sun is shining and the vibes are good.

The Shop with a Cop moms, provided a homemade lunch to all officers and volunteers, earlier this week. Its Tastier in Kansas also provided cookies for dessert in honor of Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.

Here’s the Story… of a Police Department
Who is busy keeping Hugoton safe and sound
They have badges, radios, and some coffee
Squad cars that drive all over town

There’s the Police Chief, who keeps things running
And the Admin with papers everywhere
Animal Control, busy chasing puppies
Officers who truly care

Now they’re working like one big family
Keeping peace even through lunch
And that’s the way they all became
The HPD Bunch!
