As promised, more tips to keep you comfortable and safe during Winter Storm 2026:

1. Stock up on non-perishable snacks and bottled water. Do not forget pet food and medications.

2. Consider setting fridges and freezers colder than usual. This will keep them colder longer if the power goes out. Also, remember that the fridge will stay cold approximately 4 hours if unopened, while the freezer will last 24-48 hours if full.

3. Charge everything. Phone, battery packs, cordless tools, and flashlights.

4. Turn on faucets to drip slightly. Especially on exterior walls.

5. DO NOT run generators inside. Keep them 20ft from the house for proper ventilation.

6. Keep space heaters away from curtains and bedding. We have a beautiful firetruck but we would rather not use it.

7. AVOID ROADS. Four wheel drive does not work on sheets of ice. Your brother's uncle's cousin's jacked up Jeep will not look good while we're pulling it out of the ditch. Save it for a nice spring day.

Well folks, it looks like this weekend may get a little hairy, and our firefighters and first responders are gearing up to make sure we're ready for you if you need us. While we all enjoy good ole country living, we know power outages can cripple our way of life and they happen frequently in ice situations. Here are some things you can do to prepare for the storm:

1. Fill bathtubs with water Friday evening before you go to bed. If the power goes out, your well pump will not work thus your water will not run. Being able to flush toilets is a luxury we all enjoy.

2. If you have a wood stove or fireplace, stock up on dry firewood. Have it out of the elements and readily available.

3. Consider having cash on hand. If electricity is down for prolonged periods of time, debit cards and ATMs will not work. Make sure you have a way to purchase the things you need.

4. Make sure your vehicles have fuel. You may need to sit in your vehicle for heat or to charge devices.

5. Replace the batteries in your flashlights. Have flashlights and new batteries readily available.

6. Bring your animals inside or give them a place out of the elements. Consider thick blankets and dry shelter.

7. Wrap well pumps and outside faucets. Drain and disconnect water hoses and keep them somewhere dry.

8. Close off unused rooms to conserve warmth. Rolling towels under doorjambs that lead to the outside will keep drafts from coming inside.

9. Close foundation vents to hold warmth under your house.

10. Check on your neighbors! Small children and the elderly struggle most during these events.

Stay tuned for more tips to make this weekend as easy as possible.

And as always, NSVFD is here to help!

Reminder to keep a check on the weather.

I know, I know,, we don’t know what it will do. We still have time for the forecast to change.

However, make plans now, get the essentials now. Don’t wait till the last minute. Here’s an idea of what to think of for several days without power.

For a week without power, essentials include water (1 gallon/person/day), non-perishable food, a first-aid kit, flashlights/batteries, a battery-powered/hand-crank radio (NOAA), manual can opener, medications, hygiene items, cash, and backup power banks/solar chargers, plus blankets, warm layers, and ways to stay entertained and informed to manage comfort, safety, and boredom.

Stay warm, stay safe and please say off the roads when they begin to freeze. We don’t want to have to come see you. Ice isn’t forgiving.
