🚨 WEDNESDAY MORNING UPDATE

Today, central Illinois and parts of Indiana are in the highest tornado risk area in America.

The Storm Prediction Center continues a Level 4 of 5 Moderate Risk, a category that is only issued a handful of times each year.

Both the National Weather Service and Storm Prediction Center are warning that several intense tornadoes, destructive winds over 80 mph, and very large hail are possible.

My current projected timing:

⏰ Round 1: 9 AM to 1 PM
Mainly north and central Illinois with heavy rain, hail, damaging winds, and an isolated tornado threat.

⏰ Round 2: 4 PM to 8 PM
This is the period of greatest concern.

The atmosphere should recover behind the morning storms, allowing discrete supercells to develop capable of strong tornadoes, very large hail, and widespread damaging winds.

➡️ After 8 PM the threat gradually shifts east of I-55 toward eastern Illinois and Indiana.

If you live anywhere in central Illinois, today is not the day to rely on outdoor sirens. Make sure your phone alerts are enabled and you have multiple ways to receive warnings.

UPDATE: The U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) has upgraded the risk for severe weather for tomorrow (Wednesday) to "moderate" (level 4 of 5) for central Illinois.

Possibilities include damaging winds with gusts up to 60-75 mph, large hail, scattered tornadoes, and flash flooding.

We know you're tired of storms. But we have to be prepared.

It's Fireworks Awareness Month, and here's your tip for the day! Sparklers burn at about 2,000 degrees – hot enough to melt some metals - they're a lot more dangerous than most people think. They can quickly ignite clothing, and children have gotten severe burns from dropping sparklers on their feet. According to the National Fire Protection Association, sparklers alone account for more than 25% of emergency room visits for fireworks injuries. For children under 5 years of age, sparklers accounted for nearly half of the total estimated injuries. Especially for children, consider using safer alternatives, like glow sticks, confetti poppers or colored streamers.

The Fourth of July is almost here, and we’re all set for some dazzling displays! But before you light up the night, remember these Fireworks Do's and Don'ts to keep your celebration fun and safe:

✅ DO:
🎇 Use fireworks that are legal and safe where you’ll use them.
🎇 Keep a bucket of water close by, just in case!
🎇 Find a flat, sturdy surface before lighting.
🎇 Protect yourself with safety glasses and gloves.

🚫 DON’T:
❌ Point fireworks toward your friends or family.
❌ Attempt to relight a dud—give it a rest!
❌ Place fireworks on grass or bumpy ground.
❌ Dispose of used fireworks until they are cool to touch.

IDNR has awarded $495,000 in federal grants to 73 volunteer fire departments across the state to help with purchasing new equipment or paying for fire training.

The Volunteer Fire Capacity (VFC) grant program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service. The program provides matching funds to aid fire departments in the purchase of new equipment and helps fund training. Funding is passed through IDNR to local fire departments and fire training academies.

The 73 grantees provide fire protection to about 250,000 Illinois residents, primarily in rural areas of Illinois.

☀️ Summer means it's water season! Whether you're swimming, splashing, or relaxing by the pool, it's important to put safety first—especially if you have a pool at home.

🏊 Always provide active adult supervision around water.
🚪 Keep pool gates closed and locked when not in use.
🦺 Make sure children and inexperienced swimmers wear properly fitted life jackets when appropriate.
