Memory Monday...
The Park Hotel (which many of us remember) was built in 1893 by a company composed of E.H. Viets, E.P. Tinker, and others. It was sold to Dr. Gandy and leased to several people to run it. The Humboldt Hummer said it had 29 guest rooms plus an office, washroom, and parlor. The first locks on the doors were installed about 1954. Other owners included Frank Kotouc, Bob Bowman, Henry Seits and John Kotouc. It was torn down in 1975, after catching on fire three times in less than a year. This picture is undated, but similar to one taken in 1911.

Memory Monday...
Continuing with hotels, this picture shows the Filson House, which was more of a boarding house. It was built in 1880 and was the residence of Mayor Filson. It had a limited number of rooms for the traveling public. Part of the building burned in the Star Lumber Fire, and the remainder was used for several small businesses, including real estate/income tax and rock shop, until it was torn down. It was located on south side of third street (between the square and the highway) where the metal building is now. This picture shows the A.D. Snow bus in front of the building (A.D. Snow ran the livery stable east of the old car wash)

Memory Monday...
The second hotel in Humboldt was the Central House Hotel, which was built in 1871 at 3rd & Nemaha (on the east side of the street). It was built in 1871 by S.M. Hilbert, who operated it for three years and then sold it to Luther Nims. Nims leased it to E.S. Norton for one year, then sold it to J.W. Minnick. Subsequent owners: William Sweeney, Mayor Filson, H.Anible Shurtleff. The hotel building was the largest in town at that time, being 36' x 50' on the ground floor and two stories high, exclusive of a basement which contained the dining room and kitchen. The cost of the structure was $4,500. The Central House rates were $1.00 a day.

Memory Monday...
While some of the hotel pictures have been featured before, we're going to group them one after the other over the next several weeks. This week's picture is the Enoch House, which was the first hotel in Humboldt (located in the middle of the west side of the square). It was established in 1869 by Captain Enoch, who ran it until 1882. Then it was leased to Miss Maggie E. Ellsworth. It also housed the first real post office building. There is no date for when it was discontinued and torn down but the stores that replaced it were built in 1916. In front of the building you can see Kay Dorland and Eva Ellsworth.

This Lake Scene comes from a postcard...on the back it says "Lionel Kinsey's fish pond. Look's pretty keen in a picture, tho. The state put in a lot of carp but no one can catch them."

Friday's Find-it...
It's a little surprising how often little details can be missed in the things that we see every day. Obviously this is a pattern in the brick of a building...can you identify it...either by location, business or former business?
The last find-it (2 weeks ago) could be located by going to American National Bank and looking up.

Memory Monday...
This week's picture shows Tony James Jr., standing on the south side of the square with the camera looking north (you can see the hotel on the left side). While the picture is labeled 1908, it had to be after 1912 when the bandstand was built. Also note that the old hitching posts are still in the picture. While he went by Tony James, his name was actually Thomas (1888-1925). He graduated from Humboldt in 1909, and enlisted in the army in 1917.

Memory Monday...
Let's continue one more week with the Cooper Company. Besides the usual...mill, bins, etc....there's a sign for ice and cold storage. O.A. Cooper began the ice plant in 1914. He also had the first light plant (1890), a coal yard, did livestock trading and was a pioneer automobile dealer. While his son, Guy Sr. was president, the feedmill was built, burned and rebuilt, the first locker plant was built, and he began Humboldt Grain, Cooper Seed, and Cooper Oil.

Friday's Find-it...
YES THIS picture can be found by looking up at American National Bank.
Things are looking up for this week's Find-it. Can you identify the building (or the business or former business) where you would find this?
Last week's picture was located in the upstairs of the Buy Sell Trade Store (formerly the Bowling Alley/Lodge).

Memory Monday...
Since the last of the bins are coming down, it seems like a good time for this picture. The landscape near the railroad tracks has really changed, with most of these buildings gone.
