⚠️ Localized Flash Flooding Possible This Afternoon ⚠️

The Weather Prediction Center is monitoring parts of southwestern Iowa for the potential of localized flash flooding through this evening.

Showers and thunderstorms are moving north out of Missouri and into portions of southwestern Iowa. While the storms are expected to keep moving, they may produce very heavy rainfall in a short amount of time, with rainfall rates approaching 1 inch per hour.

This is especially concerning because some areas have already received 6 to 10 inches of rain over the past few days, leaving the ground saturated and more prone to flooding.

The flash flood threat is expected to remain isolated, but if you encounter flooded roadways, remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown.

We’ll continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as needed

Spotty thunderstorms may develop this afternoon (Saturday June 6th), primarily south of Interstate 80, as daytime heating creates enough instability for isolated storms to form. These will be the typical summertime "pop-up" thunderstorms, with development expected after 4 PM, especially near the Iowa-Missouri border. The Storm Prediction Center has placed this area under a Marginal Risk for severe weather, meaning a few storms could become strong enough to produce hail or gusty winds.

Not everyone will see rain today, as these types of thunderstorms tend to be very isolated in nature. One community could experience a downpour while locations just a few miles away remain completely dry. Because storms will develop and dissipate quickly, the overall flooding threat is expected to remain minimal.

⚠️ Monitoring Storm Development Across Southern Iowa This Evening ⚠️

The atmosphere across southern Iowa remains very unstable this evening, and isolated thunderstorms may develop over the next several hours. If storms can form and strengthen, some could become severe with the potential for large hail and damaging wind gusts.

The biggest question right now is whether storms will be able to fully develop. While conditions are favorable for severe weather, confidence in storm coverage and intensity remains low. Some forecast guidance suggests stronger storm development may hold off until later this evening as additional energy arrives from the west.

The Storm Prediction Center is monitoring the situation and notes there is a 40% chance a Severe Thunderstorm Watch could be needed for portions of the area.

⚠️ Friday Severe Weather Outlook (Posted 8AM Friday) ⚠️

Thunderstorms are expected to develop across parts of Iowa late this afternoon and continue into the evening hours. A Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe weather is in place generally along and south of Highway 20, but the greatest potential for severe storms currently appears to be south of Interstate 80.

Storms are expected to develop near a boundary across southern Iowa during the late afternoon (after 6PM) and evening before gradually moving east. The primary threats will be large hail and damaging wind gusts.

A few storms could become supercells capable of producing significant hail before storms merge into clusters during the evening. While an isolated tornado cannot be completely ruled out, the tornado threat appears lower at this time compared to the hail and wind threats.

⚠️ Severe Weather Risk Friday -12:30PM THURSDAY UPDATE ⚠️

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has expanded the Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe weather on Friday across parts of Iowa and the surrounding region.

The SPC is paying close attention to southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa, where conditions may become favorable for supercells Friday afternoon and evening. While there is still uncertainty regarding how many storms will develop, the environment would support severe storms capable of producing very large hail, damaging wind gusts, and a few tornadoes. Portions of western Iowa could see hail larger than 2 inches in diameter with the strongest storms.

Elsewhere across Iowa, strong to severe thunderstorms will also be possible Friday afternoon through Friday night. The primary threats across much of the state will be large hail and damaging wind gusts, although an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

Because of the potential favorable setup across southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa, the SPC is continuing to monitor the area for a possible upgrade to an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) in future outlooks if confidence in storm development increases.

⚠️Marginal Risk of Severe Weather Today (Thursday) ⚠️

Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible across parts of Iowa later this afternoon and tonight.

The greatest risk appears to be across western, central, and southern Iowa, where a few storms could become severe as they move through the state.

Main threats include:
🌩️ Large hail
💨 Damaging wind gusts
🌪️ An isolated tornado
🌧️ Heavy rainfall and localized flash flooding

While not everyone will see severe weather, any storm that develops this afternoon and evening will need to be monitored closely.
