Dear Community,
We need your support. The community garden, which has provided free produce to local community organizations and a place for our youth to learn gardening techniques over the last few years is in dire need of your support. Our community engagement has declined significantly in recent years, forcing us to determine if we can continue hosting a public space for gardening.
At this time we need to clean up the property where the garden resides. Several dead trees have fallen causing damage to the fence which will need to be removed and reset. We have also experienced vandalism with the compost pallets being thrown into the garden, the Cobb bench being damaged beyond repair, and the little free library, needing major reconstruction to protect the books. The property has been mowed outside of the garden fencing but we will need to mow within the garden once the fence is removed and all pallet boards are safely cleaned up. There are also several fruit trees growing sideways that need proper support.
WORK SESSION: We will be hosting a few cleanup work sessions over the next couple of days.
Sunday: June 18, 2023 6-8pm
Other dates to be announced on this post.
There is no need to RSVP. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend the cleanup initiative. Please come dressed appropriately to run a mower, remove wire fencing, pickup sticks or trash in the garden. As seen in the photos there are pages from books in the grass that have been mowed that will take time and patience to cleanup.
If you are unable to attend, but would like to support the cleanup and repair initiative, please send us a direct message.
About the Garden:
In the spring of 2016 we listened to our community and started the Huntingdon Community Food Garden located on the corner of 5th and Moore Streets. This property was previously the home of the William Smith Elementary School.
