In January a local Juniata College senior reached out about organizing a community partnership for a senior project. With the help of local donations, she was able to fill 100 bags full of essential items for children and donate them to our office. We are grateful and humbled by the efforts of the community and of this now graduate of Juniata College.

As Child Abuse Prevention Month comes to an end tonight, we want to remind our community that prevention never stops. A strong community must stand together in unity to combat child abuse in Huntingdon County and across our great Commonwealth.

We would like to take this time to thank our countless partners who work daily with our office to investigate child abuse and provide the necessary services and supports to our community. These include our state and local law enforcement, service providers, counselors and mental health providers, district attorney’s office, court system, drug and alcohol providers, forensic interviewers, school districts, county commissioners, juvenile justice, and countless others. Their commitment to prevention and service is commendable and we are grateful for their partnerships.

Additionally, we would like to thank the community for being strong advocates for the children of our great county. Together we can help sure that every child lives a safe, happy, and loving childhood. A childhood protected by its community so they can grow and become our future.

If you know, hear, or suspect, child abuse, please call 814-643-3960, 1-800-932-0313, or 911.

Under Pennsylvania law, child abuse includes actions, or failures to act, that harm a child or place them at serious risk.

This can include:

⚠️ Serious physical injury
⚠️ Sexual abuse or exploitation
⚠️ Serious mental injury
⚠️ Severe neglect, including lack of supervision or medical care
⚠️ Creating a risk of serious harm

Children's Advocacy Centers are most often involved in the response to child sexual abuse allegations, but they also support children affected by physical abuse, severe neglect, trafficking, and children who witness violence.

It’s also important to know that most children are harmed by someone they know, not a stranger.

If you suspect child abuse, report it. You do not need proof, suspicion is enough.

Children often suffer abuse and neglect in silence, too young or scared to speak up. Child abuse isn't always easy to spot, but physical indicators like poor hygiene and behavioral changes can be red flags. If you notice something is off, don't hesitate to speak up to protect a child in need. Your identity is always confidential. Pinwheels are used during National Child Abuse Prevention Month because they represent the happy, healthy childhood we want for every child. They also celebrate the limitless potential of children and families when communities come together to support them. The spinning pinwheel shows us what that support can look like: with families at the center, each turn represents the systems, programs, policies, and everyday acts of care that strengthen them and help them thrive.
