Grab your bike helmet, lace up your running shoes, and come on down to Ritter Park for Fit Fest 2026 on Sept. 13! Fit Fest begins at 2 p.m. with the 5K race/walk, kids fun run will start at 3 p.m., and bike rides at 4:00! Bike rodeo and vendors will have tents up all day!

Mayor Patrick Farrell joined community leaders today at the A.D. Lewis Community Center for the Fairfield Community Roundtable Discussion, featuring John Hope Bryant, founder, chairman and CEO of Operation HOPE.

The roundtable brought together leaders from across the community for a conversation focused on Fairfield’s future, including financial literacy, entrepreneurship, small business development and economic opportunity.

Mayor Farrell provided remarks during the gathering, sharing his vision for Huntington and the importance of continuing to support investment, opportunity and progress in the Fairfield community.

Following the discussion, participants took a walking tour through Fairfield, where they continued conversations about future plans and opportunities for the community, before gathering for a group photo at the Carter G. Woodson Memorial.

The community is also invited to join Mayor Farrell and John Hope Bryant this evening for a public fireside chat and book signing at the Joan C. Edwards Playhouse.

Thank you to John Hope Bryant and the many community leaders who came together to share ideas, strengthen partnerships and help move Fairfield forward.

Flooding has been a challenge in Huntington for generations, and we’re continuing to take steps to better protect our neighborhoods.

A major part of that effort is replacing aging bridges along the Fourpole Creek corridor. Many of these bridges are nearly 100 years old, and replacing them will not only improve safety but also give floodwater and debris more room to move downstream instead of backing up into surrounding neighborhoods.

Eight bridges along the Fourpole Creek corridor are being replaced as part of a coordinated flood strategy:

1.) Memorial Arch Drive Bridge (2026) — Completed
2.) 12th Street Bridge (2026) — Under contract
3.) Enslow Boulevard Bridge (2026) — Designs complete
4.) Colonel Justice Chambers Bridge (2026) — Under contract
5.) Whitaker Boulevard Bridge (2026) — Contract awarded; construction starting soon
6.) Madison Avenue Arch Bridge (2027) — Designs complete
7.) Harvey Road Bridge (2027) — Designs complete
8.) Wilson Court Bridges 1 & 2 (2029) — In design

The bridge replacements are one piece of a larger flood mitigation effort that includes an upstream early warning system, detention pond improvements, debris and tire removal from Fourpole Creek, and continued maintenance of the City’s floodwall pumps.

We’re also working with the Southside Alliance to ensure the new bridges maintain the character of this historic neighborhood.

There’s no single fix for flooding. But project by project, and alongside our state and federal partners, we’re working to make Huntington better prepared for the next storm and safer for the families who call these neighborhoods home.

Chief Blanton has dedicated 19 years to serving the City of Huntington, rising through the ranks from firefighter to lead the department he has served throughout his career.
