The Department of Maritime Services has taken delivery of this year's oysters at Gold Star Beach. They aim to add another 500-1000 square feet of reef this season to the existing reefs inside Huntington's harbors.

Building and maintaining oyster reefs is a vital part of improving water quality in our region and the overall general health of our embayments. One single oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water per day. The reefs are built from oysters grown by the spat on shell program and obtained through the shell recycling program.

At the 2026 Scholar Athletes Awards presentation, Supervisor Smyth and the Town Board presented certificates of recognition to two exceptional students from each of the Town's ten high schools, celebrating their scholastic and athletic achievements.

Representing Half Hollow Hills High School West, Lia Cavorti is a natural defender on the soccer field, helping to elevate her teammates and put them in advantageous positions. She has earned All-State honors, indicative of her willingness to do the essential work to contribute to her team's victory. Lia has also excelled academically with a cumulative GPA of 97.5. She will attend Long Island University and compete with the Sharks at the Division I level.

Sal Caiazzo is a four-year varsity lacrosse starter and respected defenseman who has earned a place in Newsday's Top 100 Lacrosse Players, two-time All-Division honors, All-County recognition, and an All-American nomination. He has received High Honor Roll recognition for his academic achievements and utilized his discipline and commitment to excellence both on the field and in the classroom. Sal will continue his athletic and academic careers at the University of Vermont this fall.

The Town of Huntington Trail Challenge, which began on Family Earth Day, is a self-guided challenge to complete approximately 30 miles on any Town trails. To encourage resident participation, Supervisor Ed Smyth and the Town Board are highlighting Huntington's many walking, biking, and hiking trails.

Phragmites Park was created by the deposition of dredge soil in the 1960s, resulting in a series of sandy waterfront trails. The town has proposed a future restoration of the wetlands in a component of the site, which would create a tidal impoundment to provide greater habitat diversity, thereby providing a sanctuary for many more species of birds and fish. Phragmite Park's trails offer views of Northport Harbor and Bird Island, and provide access to Betty Allen Nature Preserve across Route 25A.

The Dix Hills Pool will be open tomorrow, Saturday, June 20, and Sunday, June 21, from 11:00am until 8:00pm.

Please note that the pool will be closed from June 22 through June 26, after which it will officially open for the season on Saturday, June 27. The pool is handicap-accessible, ensuring that all of our residents are able to swim safely and comfortably. For pool hours, admissions costs, and further information, please visit https://www.huntingtonny.gov/pool or contact the Dix Hills Ice Rink at (631) 462-5883. Tickets for the pool may be purchased at tohparks.net. We look forward to welcoming residents to the pool this summer.

On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas, freeing the remaining enslaved population of the United States at the end of the Civil War. Today, Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates the strength and resilience of those who came before us. An Announcement from Supervisor Ed Smyth:

I am excited to inform residents that Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a $28.5 million investment in climate resiliency and infrastructure projects across Suffolk County, the largest of which is located right here in Huntington. $12 million will go toward the replacement of the Asharoken Avenue Seawall, which is in critical need of repair. The replacement of the seawall will help to protect the residents of the community and the surrounding environment, for which it is a crucial flood mitigation measure.

I would like to thank New York State Senator Mario Mattera and New York State Assemblyman Keith Brown for their advocacy, which ensured funding for this initiative. As the attached photo shows, this has been a concern for the larger Huntington community, and I would like to thank everyone involved for their continued support.

The Juneteenth Committee, in partnership with the Town of Huntington, is proud to present Juneteenth Freedom Day, an event centered on supporting and building our community and celebrating freedom. Local vendors and Black-owned businesses will be present at the celebration. We encourage those interested to learn more about the unique products, art, and services each of the Juneteenth Freedom Day vendors has to offer.

Join us this Saturday, June 20, at Heckscher Park to celebrate freedom and strengthen our community. In the event of rain, the program will be moved to Town Hall.

After 14 years and 4 months of dedicated service to the Town of Huntington, Mike Vogeli will officially retire at the end of this month.

Mike began his service with the Town on February 14, 2012, as an Ordinance Inspector in the Department of Public Safety. In March of 2015, he was appointed Building Inspector in the Department of Engineering Services, where he served in roles such as Building Permits Coordinator and Acting Deputy Director of Engineering Services. He was appointed Chief Building Inspector in April of 2022 and became Acting Director of Engineering Services in October of 2025, a role he will hold until he retires.

Mike has long been an invaluable asset to the Town of Huntington, with strong leadership skills, a wealth of knowledge, and a deep commitment to serving Huntington's residents. The Town of Huntington is grateful to Mike for his many years of service to our town and wish him the very best in his well-deserved retirement. Thank you, Mike - we will miss you!
