Important information from the Huntington County Public Safety Dispatch: call if you can, text if you can't.
A voice call to 9-1-1 is always the fastest and most effective way to get help. Dispatchers can hear your voice, ask follow-up questions, pinpoint your location, and pick up on background sounds that matter. If it is safe and possible to speak, always call.
Texting 9-1-1 is there for the times you can't safely speak — hiding from an intruder, a domestic violence situation, or if a medical condition, disability, or speech or hearing impairment makes a call difficult. If you do text, start with 911, then include your exact location, the type of emergency, who needs help, and any immediate dangers. Keep it short and clear, skip slang and abbreviations, and answer every question the dispatcher asks.
Please do not text 9-1-1 for power outages, general information, non-emergency complaints, or anything that isn't an active emergency.
