🚧 Street Closure due to Railroad repairs!🦺

Please be aware of this closure and plan alternate routes. As always, please do not go around road closed signs and barricades!

Norfolk Southern has notified the City that the LaFontaine Street railroad crossing will close on Wednesday, September 2, for maintenance and repairs. The expected duration is through Wednesday, September 9.

Norfolk Southern asks that motorists find an alternate route and do not attempt to cross the barricades.

Congratulations, Officer Ignatius First!

The Huntington Police Department would like to congratulate Ignatius First on successfully graduating with honors from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy!

Ignatius had an outstanding academy performance, elected squad leader, finishing 4th in his class academically and 2nd in fi****ms proficiency. He finished fi****ms qualifications with perfect scores and an impressive 53 X-count!

Starting next week, Ignatius will be working to successfully complete our Field Training Program and put his academy knowledge and skills to work in the community.

Officer Kreiger was officially sworn in yesterday and continues a proud family tradition of law enforcement. A Huntington North graduate and Indiana Tech Criminal Justice graduate, Brent brings a strong commitment to serving the community he calls home.

Please use caution on US 24 near W Park Dr/ SR 9 due to an overturned semi. Minor injuries reported.

Traffic will be delayed and/or stopped to allow heavy wrecker crews time to sit the semi up safely.

Today is the Heritage Days Parade starting at 10:00 AM!

Please watch for additional street closures throughout the morning and be sure to follow directions from the traffic team and law enforcement officers at intersections along the parade route.

The parade is expected to conclude around 11:30 AM–12:00 PM. Once city services have completed roadway cleanup, normal traffic flow will resume.

Last night, a severe storm moved through our community, generating a significant increase in calls for service throughout the city. During the height of the storm, Huntington County Public Safety Dispatch was averaging nearly 60 calls per hour.

To ensure our community continued receiving the assistance it needed, HPD 2nd Shift officers stayed beyond their scheduled shifts, while 3rd Shift officers reported early to help answer calls and respond to incidents across the city.

As call volume continued to increase, Chief of Police Cory Boxell, Assistant Chief of Police Chris McCutcheon, and Detective Captain Whitacre also responded to assist officers and help work through the backlog of calls for service.

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the dedicated dispatchers of Huntington County Public Safety Dispatch for their professionalism and tireless work throughout the night. We also thank Huntington County Emergency Management for providing critical weather notifications and updates that helped keep the public informed.

A special thank you goes to our officers, who worked tirelessly clearing roadways, moving fallen trees, checking reports of downed power lines, and ensuring the safety of our residents during and after the storm.

Finally, we would like to recognize the Huntington Street Department for their outstanding efforts overnight in clearing large trees, debris, and hazards from our roadways. Their hard work was instrumental in helping restore safe travel throughout the city.

This response was truly a team effort. From dispatchers and emergency management personnel to street department crews, officers, supervisors, and command staff, everyone came together to serve our community during a challenging night. We are grateful for their dedication and commitment to keeping Huntington safe.

* At 1025 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a
tornado was located over Wabash, moving east at 65 mph.

HAZARD...Tornado.

SOURCE...Radar indicated rotation.

IMPACT...Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without
shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed.
Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree
damage is likely.

Andrews around 1030 PM EDT.
Huntington around 1035 PM EDT.

Other locations impacted by this tornadic thunderstorm include
Bowerstown, Treaty, Speicherville, Lagro, Majenica, Lancaster, Mount
Etna, Servia, Mahon, and Lincolnville.

This includes Interstate 69 in Indiana between mile markers 281 and
291.

mobile home, or in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter

This cluster of thunderstorms is capable of producing tornadoes and
